Part II

He and Rodney spend hours downloading, examining, arguing, and exploring, and he feels like they've just got started when the Colonel announces it is time to go. They can return tomorrow with a bigger team, the Colonel explains, via the Daedalus and transport the larger items.

Just in case, he and Rodney grab the two main data drives, small enough to slip into their pockets.

When they leave the cave, Radek is astonished to see the snow. "When did this happen?" There's over a foot of the stuff to trudge through to get back to the 'gate, and it's still coming down in light, airy flakes that spin and swirl before touching down.

"Oh, this is just great," Rodney grumbles.

They pick their way carefully down the path. Radek slips and falls to his knees, getting snow up his sleeve and when they get near an open area the drifts are even deeper and harder to walk through. Even so, he can't help but notice that the trees are decorated in white in a way that's almost pretty and it reminds him of Christmas time back home. The wind has died down, and it feels a little warmer than it was before, so maybe it's not so bad despite Rodney's constant complaining and then--

A snowball hits Radek's chest.

Dismayed, he looks up, trying to find the culprit but they are all busily making their way through the drifts.

It could have been anyone.

Radek's brows narrow. He picks up a handful of snow, carefully packs it into a ball. The decision is easy.

And his aim is good. The snowball hits Ronon's dreads, dead center on the back of his head.

Ronon stops and turns around, slowly.

"Rodney," Radek says. "That wasn't nice."

By the time they all stumble back through the gate, every one of them is caked with now and shivering cold. Ronon's expression is downrigh joyful. Radek is pretty sure he's never seen the Colonel laugh so hard and Teyla, of all people, has saved one last snowball for Elizabeth.

Radek clutches the data drive in his pocked and thinks that maybe off-world missions aren't necessarily bad, at least not all of them.
