My Thoughts on the Just-Announced S5 Casting Spoiler

Woolsey, huh? Not my first choice for leader of Atlantis. I was personally hoping for Caldwell, because I love MP's low growly voice. And shoulders.(Why yes, I AM shallow.) Still, I like the idea of Woolsey. RP is a fabulous actor. I like the potential for conflict, especially with Sheppard. I've been enjoying Carter in the role (much to my surprise) but she and John were in agreement most of the time and that can be kind of dull. I hope having Woolsey in command will give us some good Conflicted!John moments. Or Pissy!John. And indignant!Rodney. Along with NotPleased!Ronon. And maybe even some Scowly!Teyla. Good times ahead!

I am sad that there will be one less woman on the show though. There has been mention of a possible new female reoccurring character--military, I think. But it sounds like she'll be young and inexperienced. Meh. Not impressed so far, but I'll keep an open mind.

So, in conclusion, Rodney is yummy. (see icon).

I love RP (the doctor!). I think Woolsey is a whiny, wimpy loser, who doesn't have leadership qualities at all, and doesn't care about the welfare of Atlantis, so I am not very happy about this.

[identity profile] drlense.livejournal.com 2008-02-05 05:25 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm... conflicted. My first reaction is "ugh", but that was my first reaction to Ronon, and Keller, and a lot of other plot developments that I ended up loving, so I'm going to take a wait and see attitude.

Seriously, season 4 has been so fantastic that I'm not going to allow myself to get worked up into a lather about something that hasn't happened yet.

Hmmm. I like RP muchly, and I like Woolsey. And yeah, there should be lots more conflict with him in charge. I do hope that he went off and took some leadership classes after his last trip to Atlantis, because he would have messed that situation up royally had he been allowed to take control of it. He has no experience leading such a mission, so I'm kinda wondering how they're going to justify it.

Which is the only really important thing about SGA.*nods*

I just hope that new unexperienced character doesn't get experience by shadowing John.

Woolsey, I have no real problem with, and like you, I like that there will be one less woman on Atlantis, not that I ever had a problem with any of them at all.

[identity profile] cobweb-diamond.livejournal.com 2008-02-05 05:32 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm surprised by the so-far negative reaction to Woolsey. I think it's going to be hilarious! I mean, he's meant to be dislikeable. And he has like, nothing in common with any of the characters! The Ronon-Woolsey dynamic alone...

Also, I really hope he wears a suit and tie all the time, even offworld.

I'm excited at the thought of Atlantis vs Woosley, to be honest.

I'm happy about season 5. Carson's back Yeah!!! even if only for five episodes. I'll have to wait and see what happens with Woolsey, right now I think he's to wishy washy to be the head of Atlantis but we'll have to see how TPTB develop his character. At least he has had some interaction with Sheppard and the gang and can actually credit them with saving his skin more than once. I'll take a wait and see attitude on him. JUST GLAD CARSON'S BACK!!!

I...don't get it? People had me freaking out yesterday with the "OMG hugs season 5 spoilers, OMG!" All these things were going through my head. Oh noes, DH is leaving! No, worse! JF has gotten sick of it all and is leaving! No, worse! Weir is coming back, and she and John are having a whole passel of Shweirlings!

Then I looked, and I was all "that's it?" *shrug* Because we know how Carter turned out to be the horrible Rodney-eating she-beast...

I'm very pleased with Woolsey because he's not military and RP is a terrific actor. While I do love me some gravel-voiced broad-shouldered Mitch, a;kjflgvgnlq'bqh

sorry. Where was I? Oh, I think Woolsey will provide great opportunities for Cowboy!John. While John has matured somewhat as military commander since 'Outbreak', he DID jump out a window and set off the self-destruct during 'Quarantine' - I don't see Woolsey putting up with those shenanigans. It'll be interesting to see how Woolsey adjusts his priorities - when he became the IOA liason he did a good job shifting to a broader focus for his nudginess.

Also, I love love love that he carries a briefcase through the wormhole. It makes me ridiculously happy.

Woolsey wouldn't have been my first choice either, but hey, I'm willing to go along for the ride.

As long as that new female Captain is more like Cadman and not a girlfriend for any of the cast (male or female)...

I was eagerly awaiting the reveal after they delayed the press release by a day (bastards!). I don't mind Woolsey. I think he'll be good. He'll provide conflict, which is always good, and I like that there's room for his character to grow from clueless loser to "oh, so THAT'S what it's like out there!"

We've seen this in SG-1 and we know the character is right-thinking and reasonable, despite the fact that he has to toe the party line more often than we might like.

From a story POV, this casting makes perfect sense: if everybody's so upset about how badly everything is going and sends Woolsey to check up on it, then of course they'd assign him permanently.

I personally would prefer that they cast someone with gravitas who isn't in many of the eps--the way Hammond was in SG-1.

And WORD on the women. *sigh*

Much to my surprise, I really did like Sam, but alas, not meant to be forever, I guess.

Still, you're right about the character dynamic. There will be all kinds of fun and mischief-- our team sneaking around, maybe even some outright defiance. This could be very fun and interesting. ::fingers crossed::

[identity profile] melagan.livejournal.com 2008-02-05 06:41 pm (UTC)(link)
Woolsey crossed my mind way back pre-Sam as having excellent potential in Elizabeth's place. For all the same reasons -
Conflicted!John moments. Or Pissy!John. And indignant!Rodney. Along with NotPleased!Ronon. And maybe even some Scowly!Teyla.

Woolsey, huh? Not my first choice for leader of Atlantis. I was personally hoping for Caldwell,

Yeah, I was a little bit disappointed, little bit wary, but one thing that I noticed this season was developments that I wasn't that keen on (eg Sam coming on board) was handled extremely well so I guess it's just a case of keeping the faith.

And in that spirit I shall now light a candle and fall to my knees praying desperately, possibly with a side order of goat sacrifice.

There has been mention of a possible new female reoccurring character--military, I think.

I'm afraid she'll turn out to be Cadman Part Deux which... yeah, really, really don't like Cadman, although I think I'm in the minority here.

I'm not thrilled with Woolsey taking over. I think the character is best served in tiny amounts. But, again, I think I'm in the minority.

Caldwell would have been awesome.

And in conclusion, yes, Rodney is yummy with a side of scrumptious. *g*

I told my mom about Woolsey and she was like, 'what?'. It was funny. We'll see where it goes.

I think Woolsey and Rodney will bond (hee, I mis-typed boned!) and John will be all steam coming out his ears and Rodney will be like, chill out dude, he's cool.

[identity profile] tabby333.livejournal.com 2008-02-05 09:43 pm (UTC)(link)
I was rooting for Caldwell as well for the conflict factor (and his leadership). I can see the conflict factor in Woolsey, too, and I like Robert Picardo. But Woolsey? I just don't know. He isn't a leader. He's wimpy. He can't make split second decisions. How can this work?

Still, I'll hold my judgment until I see it on screen. Even if I I hold Keller as a mark against TPTB (and only because she's whiny and inexperienced and annoying), I've enjoyed Carter and Ronon, so I'll give TPTB the benefit of the doubt. For now.

[identity profile] neevebrody.livejournal.com 2008-02-05 10:15 pm (UTC)(link)
Well, at the risk of being dull and boring, I agree with you. I really have enjoyed Carter this season but admit her role has been less than I expected or wanted actually. I like Woolsey and yes, I hope the writers will give him a few different dimensions as leader. But again, sparks flying between John and Woolsey and the TEAM rallying around, should make for some interesting episodes.

I also agree about MP's shoulders, but then I may have a thing for shoulders! Honestly, I was just happy not to see Jill Wagner's name listed among the "recurring" or "guest" roles. Not that I don't like her as an "enemy," just not an ally and a close one at that.

Alas, again, I must concur with your conclusion! *g* It's all good!

[identity profile] patk.livejournal.com 2008-02-06 12:06 am (UTC)(link)
>>I hope having Woolsey in command will give us some good Conflicted!John moments. Or Pissy!John. And indignant!Rodney. Along with NotPleased!Ronon. And maybe even some Scowly!Teyla.<<

*g* That and, if I think back about how he handled Elizabeth's and Sam's "performance reviews" in the end of the respective episodes, I think there might come a moment when he's going to save John's and Rodney's jobs for them by *not* reporting home what *exactly* happened. *g*

Yes, I think with Woolsey as leader of Atlantis there are *tons* of possibilities in every direction.

Plus - he's not an expert in science nor in military matters which means, Rodney's and John's roles are going to be strengthened by that.

What I think Woolsey surely *is*: an absolute pro with paperwork and administrative matters. With Woolsey reporting back to earth the reports of the Atlantis mission will reach a previously unheard of level of quality. *g* Poor guy will get grey hair over writing them and trying to explain the somethimes not-explainable. ;-)

Yes, I think Woolsey is a great choice because there's just so much possibility for development in every direction. :-)

I think it'll be a great chance for him to learn how not B&W Pegasus is. Should be interesting.

[identity profile] mz-bstone.livejournal.com 2008-02-06 01:49 am (UTC)(link)
I think Woolsey a.)tries to do the right thing b.) is capable of learning c.) and steps up when he has to. He is frequently terrified but he still keeps coming back.

He's always been the bridge between the talk-talk world of politics and the "doing" world of the SGC and Atlantis, and depending on the script, there have been attempts to balance that.

I think if you put him at the helm, he will find his equilibrium.

I think Woolsey is genius casting. I wanted Atlantis to return to civilian control (yay!) and Woolsey allows for some GREAT potential head-butting. Putting him in command will allow some character exploration and hopefully bring a strength that he hasn't had before. I was so happy it wasn't Caldwell. Not that I don't like him, because I DO, but I didn't want it to be a military mission where the leader was making everyone carry the strict military line. A threat to John's command would make me sad :(
