Woolsey, huh? Not my first choice for leader of Atlantis. I was personally hoping for Caldwell, because I love MP's low growly voice. And shoulders.(Why yes, I AM shallow.) Still, I like the idea of Woolsey. RP is a fabulous actor. I like the potential for conflict, especially with Sheppard. I've been enjoying Carter in the role (much to my surprise) but she and John were in agreement most of the time and that can be kind of dull. I hope having Woolsey in command will give us some good Conflicted!John moments. Or Pissy!John. And indignant!Rodney. Along with NotPleased!Ronon. And maybe even some Scowly!Teyla. Good times ahead!
I am sad that there will be one less woman on the show though. There has been mention of a possible new female reoccurring character--military, I think. But it sounds like she'll be young and inexperienced. Meh. Not impressed so far, but I'll keep an open mind.
So, in conclusion, Rodney is yummy. (see icon).

Date: 2008-02-05 06:15 pm (UTC)I know! Sam was such a monster! I'll admit to being a bit dubious at first, because some the stuff they wrote for her on SG1 was just painful, but she really worked out well. And really, it's a pretty minor role. As long as we have John and Rodney and Teyla and Ronon going off on adventures, I'm happy. *g*

Date: 2008-02-05 06:17 pm (UTC)sorry. Where was I? Oh, I think Woolsey will provide great opportunities for Cowboy!John. While John has matured somewhat as military commander since 'Outbreak', he DID jump out a window and set off the self-destruct during 'Quarantine' - I don't see Woolsey putting up with those shenanigans. It'll be interesting to see how Woolsey adjusts his priorities - when he became the IOA liason he did a good job shifting to a broader focus for his nudginess.
Also, I love love love that he carries a briefcase through the wormhole. It makes me ridiculously happy.

Date: 2008-02-05 06:22 pm (UTC)Good point about Cowboy!John--I'm curious to see what Woolsey (Mr. Suit and Tie and Briefcase!) thinks of him, and how he treats him. Some interesting scenes ahead, I'm sure! They're about as polar opposite as two people can be.

Date: 2008-02-05 06:30 pm (UTC)We've seen this in SG-1 and we know the character is right-thinking and reasonable, despite the fact that he has to toe the party line more often than we might like.
From a story POV, this casting makes perfect sense: if everybody's so upset about how badly everything is going and sends Woolsey to check up on it, then of course they'd assign him permanently.
I personally would prefer that they cast someone with gravitas who isn't in many of the eps--the way Hammond was in SG-1.
And WORD on the women. *sigh*

Date: 2008-02-05 06:37 pm (UTC)Aw, Hammond. There's only one Hammond. I adored him. I was never able to warm up to Landry. I think Caldwell has that kind of presence, though, which is why he was my first choice.
I'm happy about Daniel showing up on Atlantis, too! It's so perfect for the character. He totally needs to visit.

Date: 2008-02-05 06:34 pm (UTC)Still, you're right about the character dynamic. There will be all kinds of fun and mischief-- our team sneaking around, maybe even some outright defiance. This could be very fun and interesting. ::fingers crossed::

Date: 2008-02-05 07:01 pm (UTC)Yeah, I was a little bit disappointed, little bit wary, but one thing that I noticed this season was developments that I wasn't that keen on (eg Sam coming on board) was handled extremely well so I guess it's just a case of keeping the faith.
And in that spirit I shall now light a candle and fall to my knees praying desperately, possibly with a side order of goat sacrifice.

I'm not thrilled with Woolsey taking over. I think the character is best served in tiny amounts. But, again, I think I'm in the minority.
Caldwell would have been awesome.
And in conclusion, yes, Rodney is yummy with a side of scrumptious. *g*

Date: 2008-02-05 10:15 pm (UTC)I also agree about MP's shoulders, but then I may have a thing for shoulders! Honestly, I was just happy not to see Jill Wagner's name listed among the "recurring" or "guest" roles. Not that I don't like her as an "enemy," just not an ally and a close one at that.
Alas, again, I must concur with your conclusion! *g* It's all good!

Date: 2008-02-06 12:06 am (UTC)*g* That and, if I think back about how he handled Elizabeth's and Sam's "performance reviews" in the end of the respective episodes, I think there might come a moment when he's going to save John's and Rodney's jobs for them by *not* reporting home what *exactly* happened. *g*
Yes, I think with Woolsey as leader of Atlantis there are *tons* of possibilities in every direction.
Plus - he's not an expert in science nor in military matters which means, Rodney's and John's roles are going to be strengthened by that.
What I think Woolsey surely *is*: an absolute pro with paperwork and administrative matters. With Woolsey reporting back to earth the reports of the Atlantis mission will reach a previously unheard of level of quality. *g* Poor guy will get grey hair over writing them and trying to explain the somethimes not-explainable. ;-)
Yes, I think Woolsey is a great choice because there's just so much possibility for development in every direction. :-)

True! I can see him being very much an administrator, and relying a lot on the people around him. As for the reports, yeah, he's going to learn to do some creative writing, isn't he? That should be interesting. I could imagine his priorities shifting and his loyalties changing with this experience.
It should be pretty darn interesting!

Date: 2008-02-06 01:49 am (UTC)He's always been the bridge between the talk-talk world of politics and the "doing" world of the SGC and Atlantis, and depending on the script, there have been attempts to balance that.
I think if you put him at the helm, he will find his equilibrium.
