Supernatural 5.14 "My Bloody Valentine"
Feb. 11th, 2010 09:32 pmFirst of all - yuck. The opening was rather gruesome. I sort of didn't watch once I realize where it was going.
Secondly...CASTIEL. I will never ever get tired of Castiel on a cell phone. It's so...incongruous. And strangely adorable. Especially with "I'll hang up now." Clearly, he's still trying to figure this human stuff out. And with Cupid, okay, that scene was a hoot, because again, I will never get tired of hilariously deadpan Castiel.
Can you tell I full of Castiel-generated joy right now?
But Castiel-inspired glee aside, I really enjoyed this. Another horseman! Famine! I loved the portrayal. Loved seeing Sammy fall prey to demon blood again. And I can't help it, I LOVE seeing Sam trashing demons with his mind. There is something awe-inspiring about that kind of power, no matter where it comes from. I felt bad for him, and I know there are consequences, but it's so much better than watching demons kick his and Dean's asses.
Also, Cas/hamburger FTW.
Interesting that Dean didn't feel any hunger - I wasn't sure if we were supposed to buy Famine's explanation for that. Broken!Dean seems kind of shoehorned in with the way the storyline has been going so far this season, but I guess I'm not taking into account what happened last week. Still, the ending scene with Dean outside calling out to god seemed a bit out of proportion to what had happened - I think it would have made more sense to me if it had happened last week. Or after "Abandon all Hope". Because this ep felt like a victory of sorts - they vanquished Famine, and Sam, even though he fell prey to demon blood again, had enough control over himself to use it to their advantage. So yeah, while the aftermath sucks, but they're all still alive and relatively unscathed. (I'm sure Cas has a bellyache though).
Still, I enjoyed it. A lot.

Date: 2010-02-12 05:47 pm (UTC)Cupid's revelation RE ensuring that John & Mary fell in love, also contributed to Dean's breakdown. The realization that Angels were screwing with them even before birth, coming right after Michael's spiel from last week must've left Dean feeling trapped... not by destiny but by manipulation from Angels and Demons to conform to their plans. I'm thinkin' the Angels better hope God doesn't show up [this is the FIRST time Dean has called on God] cuz the ongoing subversion of the Winchesters' Free Will would be enough to really piss God off. Stupid Angels.
If John's bloodline made Sam and Dean suitable as vessels, wonder what Mary's bloodline contributed?

Good question. I was thinking that it was her being a hunter that was important, but then again, I'm sure there were other female hunters around. It would be interesting if it was something deeper than that.

The last scene, I just saw it as the last straw, after Jo and Ellen, and his mum and dad, to have to put Sam back on cold turkey and hearing him call out for him. But I worry that asking for 'help' will be all the invitation Michael needs.

Destiny, my ass. If it were so damn predetermined then why are the angels trying so very, very, hard to make it happen?

Date: 2010-02-14 03:15 am (UTC)Oh yes yes yes, Sam was ridiculously hot all hopped up on demon juice.
I don't think Dean was talking to Michael at all at the end - I think he was calling out to god, who he refuses to believe exists. Very interesting.
