Soooo, I was making icons today (as opposed to doing something useful with my day off) and came to very important conclusion regarding Jack and Daniel's faces. BTW, please feel free to take any of these icons, if you are so inclined. Nothing fancy, just my feeble attempt to make a point.
It all started with my realization that Daniel makes a funny little wrinkly spot between his eyebrows when he frowns. It comes from drawing his eyebrows together:

It's very similar to my sister's Labrador Retriever, quite frankly. And just as endearing. It's generally an indication that Daniel is either a) feeling very earnest or is b) trying hard to understand something complicated, whether it be the inscribed glyphs on an alien device, or why on earth is Jack is wearing that shirt with those pants. It's not to be confused with the wrinkly forehead, which is due to raising the eyebrows, rather than tucking them together, and is not a frown at all:

This is an expression indicating surprise or dismay, as in "Take my pants off? Here? Now?" or "I can't believe Jack is wearing that shirt with those pants".
Now, Jack--Jack has an entirely different look to him when he frowns:

Yes, Jack has the squinty frown. His brows go down, rather than come together, and his cheeks sometimes get in on the act. He has one line between his brows, not a complicated little wrinkle. And, unlike Daniel, he doesn't come across as particularly earnest when he frowns, either. He just looks annoyed. Or maybe even pissed. "Is that a Goa'uld Mothership on the horizon?" or "Oh, for crying out loud, Daniel, just take your clothes off."
Jack also does the wrinkled forehead of surprise, and it looks pretty silly on him, if you ask me:

As in, "how was I supposed to know Teal'c was going to come barging in?"
So, the question I pose is: Which one is sexier? I'm thinking that the Daniel crinkly frown is awful cute, but the Jack squinty frown is hot.The squinty frown means trouble, and possibly, danger. The crinkly frown may mean trouble, too, but in an entirely different context. ("But Jack, listen, let me try this again....")
I may need to examine more images to confirm this, though.
My final thought is:

Because--you know? Chest hair trumps all. *g*

Date: 2004-09-06 07:43 pm (UTC)I noticed Jack's frowns all the time. :) (le sigh) That vertical line is actually visible almost all the time, although it's a lot stronger when he frowns. And he can do this thing where his eyebrows come *down* in the center but he doesn't actually squint (like example #1 above), and I think that when he does that, he looks *SO* supremely pissed-off. And you're also right -- Jack's earnest look never involves the frown or the squint.
And you're also *SO* right. Chest hair really does trump all! :D Especially when it's just peeking out of an open collar.

Date: 2004-09-06 07:52 pm (UTC)Personally, I find Daniel's facial expressions more appealing. Jack appears to either be suffering some form of medical distress, or, in the case of exhibit Jack-B (2), like he has seen something truly disturbing (such as an alternate universe Jack and Sam getting it on in the locker room.) However, the chest hair is not to be overlooked, neither are such (unmentioned) points such as Jack's hands, back and sunglasses. So at this time, it would be impossible for me to make a definitive statement.
But I'll look the evidence over again, just in case.

Date: 2004-09-06 08:32 pm (UTC)I knew I could count on you to agree re the chest hair. Plus there's something about the whole open-collar/exposed throat thing that makes me all wibbly. And the blue shirt is really workin' for him there.

Date: 2004-09-06 08:37 pm (UTC)And if you come across any further data, such as Jack hands, back and sunglasses, please, do share. Oh, wait, there's data staring me right in the face--your icon. Hands. Yup. You definitely have a point there.
Maybe we need a Jack/Daniel hand comparison...with visuals, of course.

Thanks for this little "forehead and frown" briefing : very educationnal...
It is a fascinating subject. And so very well documented, too !
I must admit I totally agree with your final thought.
::licks chest hair::

Date: 2004-09-07 07:33 am (UTC)daniels wrinkly frown is very sweet! I much prefer that to his raised brow one he does! probably something to do with plucking 8-/
but IMO Jack wins!
maybe not the actual expessions, but the reasons behind them, he can frown for annoyance, but its the 'other' frowns, when he tries not to show emotion, as its difficult for him. Although his frowns may look similar, they are very differnt in context.
hes a man who rarely cries, but when he does! I crumble into tiny pieces ::sniffle::
I think Daniel is very readable in his expressions, but Jack needs more investigation.
hes a deep guy! hidden depths!!! thats sexy 8-))
Of course, i may be projecting! *g*

Date: 2004-09-07 02:58 pm (UTC)I agree with your assessment of Jack. Daniel wears his heart on his sleeve, but not Jack. There's a whole lot going on just beneath the surface, but he doesn't let it show. And when he does, it's heartbreaking.
