Even though I'm very busy today at work, I somehow accidentally found myself at Gateworld, and saw this in the description of the Atlantis Universe:

As hoped, the lost city is indeed a treasure trove of advanced technology, which includes such things as a universal translation device. Each team member traveling off-world receives one, which is capable of instantly translating virtually any language encountered.

Was this ever shown in "Rising"? Where the devices ever mentioned on the show? I'm thinking this was somewhat tongue-in-cheek.

And how come I have to work when I'd rather be writing? Huh? Huh?

I don't remember it coming up in Rising either (pardon the pun). I think it was one of those jokes.

Oh it's easy. The muses? They wait until you can't write and then BOOM with the plot ideas. It's irksome really. :-p

Oh, I hate when I accidentally end up spending hours surfing the 'Net at work. Oops!

I don't recall them ever mentioning the devices on the show. I was letting it go in that "SG-1's been doing it for years" kind of way.

And how come I have to work when I'd rather be writing? Huh? Huh?

Because--the universe is seeking some sort of balance? Red Sox win necessitates the delay of Grrrlfic?

I'm not sure that's a good trade. Dangit.

Apparently. Me, [livejournal.com profile] miera_c, and the whole Red Sox Nation thing (which, frankly, I find amusing on the same level as the KISS Army).

I'm sorry! My bad! How can I make it up to you?

Um, you like to eat?

If it counts for anything, I'd rather you were writing, too.

It's like those brilliant fic ideas I get just before I fall asleep at night. At least I'm pretty sure they were brilliant, since I hardly ever remember them in the morning.

Yup, brilliant.

I have absolutely no idea how I wound up on Gateworld. And why my LJ flist keeps popping up in that one window that's hidden behind my Word doc.

No idea at all.

Bwahahaha! I don't know if it's TPTB of Stargate or Gateworld, but someone is having a grand old fanwank there. It certainly wasn't shown on TV.

Hmmm, I wonder if it goes in the ear like a Babelfish, or if it involves translation microbes like on Farscape.

Well, why do they need universal translation devices, since everyone alread speaks American English c. 21st century.

And how come I have to work when I'd rather be writing? Huh? Huh?

Dunno. But it sucks. RL really gets in the way of fannish goodness.

Cookie?

So, when they have Emmagan translating, that's just for... what? To make the natives feel less restless? And wouldn't they hear it as English then? Huh?

I can assure anyone who isn't certain of this that there were no translation devices in "Rising." Unless Shep's ATA gene is so damn cool that he can create a 'translation field' like Cypher of the "New Mutants," before he was killed back in the 80s...

Which would be kind of neat, actually, and would certainly go with his uncanny piano playing abilities. Not that I'm bitter.

I can totally understand how the CPU gremlins would hide your LJ and Gateworld behind your work windows. Evil, evil gremlins.

I'm voting for microbes. Nanites.

::sniffs:: Yes please.

From: [identity profile] thegrrrl2002.livejournal.com
When did they have her translating? Maybe they hadn't found the devices yet. *g*

And that link is actually to the pg LJ community. I need to update those links, don't I?
From: [identity profile] maching-monkey.livejournal.com
Oh! the LJ! I had forgotten about that. I am no longer sad. :-)

In "Suspicion," Emmagan was yelling something to the natives in thier own language, I presume. So maybe they heard it in English, and therefore were unwilling to come out. ;->

Really, you'd think techology would be better than that.

Well, *we* don't have the translation device, right? So we were hearing her POV. Untranslated.

Ow, that makes my head hurt.
