Shiny Sci-fi Friday!

Note to Sci-fi channel: Get some new SG1/SGA/BSG promos, please. The current ones are very nice, but after three hours, they get rather tedious.

Reckoning, Part 1

This episode was chock-full of all my favorite things, and yet somehow it left me feeling unfufilled. I'm not sure why. I loved all the storylines--replicators, the Goa'uld, Thor (and his cute little grey butt!), Jaffa rebellion, Jacob, Bray'tac--all good things. I mean, come on, Baal asking Jack for help? Which lead to such wonderful Jack moments. It was played perfectly, Jack being as flippant as ever, hell, even gloating over the situation, yet there was a darkness behind it all. I think maybe I just wanted more depth to the stories. Suddenly the replicators are giving the Goa'uld a run for their money. Suddenly repliCarter has Daniel. Suddenly the Jaffa rebellion is in danger. Suddenly there's this holy city of Ta'kara that is so very important, that it was never mentioned before. And so important that it was taken without a fight. (I swear, I thought I missed a scene there!) It was as if they threw the kitchen sink at us.

And I have to admit, the Daniel thing bugged me. I'm not one of those fans who think that Daniel is constantly being abused and slighted, but I would have appreciated a little concern for his situation. Yeah, sure, defeating the replicators would most likely save him, and there is the whole universe at stake (yet again) but still...Jack showed more concern for Teal'c than Daniel. (says the slasher in a sulky, whiney, OTP kind of way).

I also tend to prefer episodes where the team works together, so that might explain my disgruntledness right there. That, plus I think I've been spoiled by my shiny new show, Atlantis. Storylines that build slowly, continuity, characterization (well, some) and angst, fear, teamwork, concern over each other's well-being, all those little things that make a show work. (We're still on our honeymoon, can you tell?).

Still, there's a lot I liked about this ep. Baal basically trying to doublecross Anubis, how marvelous is that? Plus he was hotter than ever in this ep, wasn't he? Loved the face he made after Anubis switched bodies. Perfect. Anubis actually creeped me out a bit here, for the first time ever. And, speaking of hot, we get to see Daniel in his blue robes again. That made me very happy. Loved his interactions with not-Oma, especially his realization that it wasn't Oma after all. I would have loved to see more of it, but, since I'm totally spoiled for upcoming eps, I won't dwell on that. I also enjoyed seeing Jacob again, especially the bit about his disagreements with the Tok'ra high council. You know, I'm with Jack--I never trusted them. Loved Jack's line about whether it was Jacob or Selmak speaking. I think their scenes brought out the fact that the SGC and the Tok'ra still don't see eye to eye.

I even enjoyed Sam working with Thor to deal with the repilicator resistance to the weapon, even though it had a been-there, done-that kind of feel to it.

So, if I liked all these things, why didn't I enjoy the episode more?

One last thought--this holy city, Ta'kara, has an ancient weapon that has the power to destroy all the replicators, right? If the ancients had the ability to come up with something like that, how come they couldn't defeat the wraith?

And one more thought--Yu!! She killed Yu!! Did she kill his hot little First Prime, too? Are we to assume they're all dead, or was she distracted by capturing Daniel?

The Brotherhood

I thought this was a fun ep. Yeah, it had the Indiana Jones thing going on, but I liked it, a lot. (see honeymoon comment above). Kolya is back! He's a good bad guy. And there were such lovely slashy moments between John and Rodney. John clearly was not happy about Allina flirting with Rodney like that. That little "whose bed?" comment was just a tad bitchy. And then encouraging Rodney to get some sleep, rather than go and try and make something of it with Allina--yeah, right. So jealous. And the whole Mensa thing--was Rodney turned on by that or what? Plus Rodney and his big-eyed "I'm sorry" whisper to John as he was about to test out the order of the stones, awww. Not to mention him snapping to Kolya "what, is there someplace you have to be" when Kolya tried to hurry them along.

I so love my shiny gay show.

But anyway, back to the story--all that digging (and getting dirty, yum!) and work and puzzle solving and being threatened and poor Rodney getting blasted by the concussion bomb (love the way he whines about it, just so Rodney), and they get the damn ZPM taken from them at the end. First time I watched the ep I was genuinely surprised. I wanted them to return with guns and take it back by force. I mean, it's not like they are making any friends in the damn galaxy to begin with. And it's not a holy relic, it belongs to Atlantis!

Meanwhile, back on Atlantis, Zelenka gets to be cute and smart and swear in czech. And have a wonderful little scene with Weir. "You are the loop". ::swoons:: He would be so good for her, wouldn't he? I also enjoyed watching Carson and Bates in the 'jumper. Carson's complaining hit the right notes for me, previously I've felt that he was being a little too whiny, but here I thought it was consistent and in character. Plus, I like the way Bates handled him.

But we lose Markham. He gets blowed up. ::sniffs::

This is the ep that made it sound like Atlantis only has three jumpers. (Who are we going to get to fly the third jumper?) And yet, in other eps, we see that the jumper bay is full of jumpers. Definitely more than three of them.

There were a few bits in this ep that were off to me. I thought in the opening, McKay jumping down everyone's throats for laughing and having fun while they were looking through the documents on Dagan was a little over the top. I thought it was a rather clumsy bit of exposition, because of course the rest of the team would know how important the mission was, and they can enjoy themselves while they do it, can't they?

I think there were other bits, too, but I can't think of any more right now.

And next week--"Letters from Pegasus". Squee!!

*delurks* Hello! I think this is my first post here....I've been stealth posting a lot in the SGA community lately...heh. ^_^

Anyways...

I wanted them to return with guns and take it back by force.

Yeah, I was thinking that too...actually I have this bigger-than-a-drabble plotbunny with Rodney going back to Allina after The Seige Pt. 2 and showing her a list of their dead because she didn't give him the ZedPM so they didn't have the shield...but then I started to think that not even Rodney is that bitchy sooo...[really, this plotbunny could become a monster but I have no way of figuring out how to pull off Canon!Rodney in it....which is probably a good thing].

I also enjoyed watching Carson and Bates in the 'jumper.

"I'm a doctor, not a bloody fighter pilot!" <--- Bones. So, so, Bones.

This is the ep that made it sound like Atlantis only has three jumpers

I'm pretty sure they have more than three [around twelve?], but they only have so many people who know how [and can, with the gene] to pilot them. Before this episode there were five: John, Rodney, Carson, Markham, and whoever it is in Puddle Jumper 3 [I don't think it's Stackhouse...]. Carson hates to fly, so he's the last person they'd go to...Rodney, while he probably still needs more practice, actually seems to like flying so I'm hoping he'll be better at it soon. *lol*

Carson really needs to get over his anxiety over certain ancient technology [aka anything that can be potentially dangerous] because he actually did a good job in both "The Eye" and this episode. I realize it was computer animation, but that turn of his after Markham and Smith went down....dang. *g*

McKay jumping down everyone's throats

I think Rodney was just so focused on getting a ZedPM that his whole personality shifted. It isn't completely out of character for him to...give credit when it's due and being nice while doing so. Look at the beginning of Hot Zone...he does know how to motivate his people [which considering the amount of Fanon with him being a 100% ass to them, must have surprised a lot of people].

So whenever we see him with Allina, he's being so nice partly because he wants the ZedPM and partly because he does find interesting [I'm starting to think that him and Daniel spent waaay to much time together in Antartica....or PegB is even more right then we know].

The whole jumping down his teams' throats was because of his focus on the ZedPM as well...the more time they take laughing is the more time it takes to find the ZedPM.

I'm starting to think that I can never just call it ZPM again....it has to be ZedPM, has to be. *nods stubbornly*

Ta!

So, if I liked all these things, why didn't I enjoy the episode more?

Hm, I felt the same way. On the one hand I did enjoy it, but on the other there was something off about it. I later thought it might've been the comic timing... it came across as too forced at times, too foreseeable. (Not that it didn't still make me laugh.)

Hee! I'm capping The Brotherhood right now. *paws*

Plus Rodney and his big-eyed "I'm sorry" whisper to John as he was about to test out the order of the stones, awww.

I loved the big eyes! It made him look so vulnerable for a moment. (I have a Thing for that, big h/c h0r that I am.)

I wanted them to return with guns and take it back by force. I mean, it's not like they are making any friends in the damn galaxy to begin with. And it's not a holy relic, it belongs to Atlantis!

I had the exact same reaction to that. It really annoyed me that they lost that ZPM, and for such a stupid reason, too.

This is the ep that made it sound like Atlantis only has three jumpers. (Who are we going to get to fly the third jumper?) And yet, in other eps, we see that the jumper bay is full of jumpers. Definitely more than three of them.

Hm. I think it's more that they don't have enough people to fly them. Sheppard is a natural obviously, and therefore the only one who can give flying lessons. Think that's how he spends his free time (if he HAS free time), teaching people how to fly the jumpers? Heh.

Rodney going back to Allina after The Seige Pt. 2 and showing her a list of their dead because she didn't give him the ZedPM

Oh yeah, really. I can see him being that angry. But she would just say that it's all part of the Ancient's grand plan or something.

I find it interesting that the ancients are so worshipped in the galaxy, especially considering the less-than-noble aspects we've been seeing of them. It makes a nice contrast. And it leaves our heros sputtering "but they had no grand plan!!".

I'm pretty sure they have more than three [around twelve?],

That sounds more like it. I just don't know why "three" was mentioned specifically. Why not just go after the dart with two of them? A third jumper piloted by someone without any fighterpilot experience doesn't seem to be particularly useful. More like a target than anything else.

I know, I should just let it go rather than dwelling on one silly line. *g*

I'm starting to think that him and Daniel spent waaay to much time together in Antartica...

Hee! I never thought of that. But he was really getting into the whole archeology thing, wasn't he? I was thinking that he was getting caught up in the puzzle-solving aspect of it. Plus he really, really really wanted that ZedPM.

Poor guy. I guess I can understand him getting wound up over it all.

I just watched Reckoning part 2 (I'm weak. Pathetically so.) I felt the exact same way about part 1 you did - it's all there, but not quite working for me. Part 2? Worked. :)

Although I think they should've named Part 2 "It's All Happening At Takara." ;)

Ba'al is the hottest Goa'uld ever. And that squicks me a little to say, but damn.

I'm relieved my tv screen indicated that Zelenka is not definitively shorter than Weir. *g*

Carson objected but he quieted down fast enough, and the line about "I don't have a clean shot" showed he does know what he's doing if he'd trust himself a little more. But what I really loved about him protesting to Bates? Was the way Bates responded. In "Rising" Sumner finds Bates confronting Carson about checking his gear, and Carson snaps at Sumner, "I don't answer to you." Bates tells Sumner Carson said the same thing and Sumner says to Bates, "That's what your sidearm is for." But Bates doesn't react that way here. Instead of yelling at Carson and giving him orders (like Ford did in "The Eye") Bates stays relatively calm and says "I for one would like to mount the best defense possible" and *that* shuts Carson up.

Whether Bates picked this up from Sheppard or Weir is debatable. But he's apparently learned how to handle the scientists, at least to a better degree than when the series started, and better than Ford!

ohwhattageekiam.

I Know! It's starting to seem like the Ancients are more screwed up then the Tokra! *sighs* Although I have to mention liking Janus...I'm kind of hoping he becomes the patron Ancient of Atlantis or something because I could see him popping up to help Elizabeth or maybe even Rodney somewhere along the line. Heh. ^_^

A third jumper piloted by someone without any fighterpilot experience doesn't seem to be particularly useful

I get where you are coming from. That aside, I really think that Carson could kick ass in a jumper, he just doesn't believe in himself in that way. He sees himself as a Doctor, not a Fighter Pilot....just like Rodney sees himself as a Scientist and not a Fighter as well. What they both have to realize with the shortage of people on Atlantis is that they have to become both.

Which they are starting to...and I think that with Rodney regardless as to how populated Atlantis becomes in the next Season he's still going to have to know how to fight, because he's apart of the Flagship Team [which I like to call Atlantis-1, but that's me ^_^]. In this aspect he is becoming the SGA version of Daniel.

Hee! I never thought of that. But he was really getting into the whole archeology thing, wasn't he? I was thinking that he was getting caught up in the puzzle-solving aspect of it. Plus he really, really really wanted that ZedPM

It actually goes back to my whole pre-Rising idea...I've been thinking that Elizabeth, Rodney, and Carson have been probably with the mission since the very early stages and it's possible that Daniel was helping since the get go as well. It probably took them a few months to the point where we meet John and during that time since Daniel wasn't allowed to go he'd be teaching someone how to read ancient, yes? Both Elizabeth and Rodney know how to read it...right? That and I can see Daniel just wanting to be a part of anything Ancient so I can see him bugging Rodney on occasion. *lol*

When you think about it there is the possiblity that Rodney might be closer to Daniel in terms of friendship [companionship?] then to Sam by the time they leave. But that is if Sam never went down to Antartica....*shrugs* Of course this is all Fanon speculation, but isn't that what we are here for? *g*

Also, yeah...Rodney and puzzle-solving pretty much go hand to hand, don't they? *g*

I lovelovelove "breaking up is hard to do"! It's like in the top 5 of my favourite SGA fics. That aside....are you sure you want to change it? Maybe you can give us a sequel instead and then have John impress Rodney with his Mensa test-taking then? *hint hint, nudge nudge*

I've actually had a couple plotbunnies for a sequel to your fic but of course I don't really let them go anywhere because I'm not one to encroach on another's stories. So under the rug they go with all of the other dustbunnies. ^_~

Brotherhood had some great moments. The McShEP! LOL
I thought Allina was pumping Rodney from the beginning.
I didn't really get jealous froM Shep, even with my mcShep glasses on> More amused. But that could just be me. LOL
It was fun to watch.

I wanted more of a Kolya/shep confrontation but this ep so totally set that up. "NEXT TIME I WILL KILL YOU" So..there must be a next time coming.

Loved the Mensa stuff and I loved muchly, how hesitant Shep was to put his hands in the hand spots. And after the ZPM popped out. Before he signalled Ford to release the flash bangs...didja see that shudder exhale of relief? Super nuanced moment of acting from Joe.

And I just loved Rodney's excitment of Shep being smart enough to join Mensa and telling him about the Atlantis version

They could have done less of the Rodney and Alina with Kolya or even shortened teh Rodney and Alina moments a bit to fit in an McShep moment on the Jumper going home. They were all upset about losing the ZPM, and I'm sure Rodney felt a guilty. It would have been great to see Shep get Rodney distracted with a MENSA talk. That would have been so cool And I can picture Rodney bugging Shep. "So..how high IS your IQ anyway?" And Shep just not telling and it just begs for a fic. Right?????

Anyway. Loved Zalenka. Yeppers. I have a crush on him just like he has a crush on Weir.

And What's up with Weir? The way she reacted to Markham and Smith dying and the way she delivered the news to Shep was...cold. Just cold. I loved Shep's Honest/real reaction.

And before then..dontcha think Rodney wanted to slap her? I mean..Of course they tried to get the ZPM back. DUH! I rather wish Rodney had slapped Weir! LOL

Part 2? Worked

Oh good, I'm so glad to hear that. Because they're setting up such interesting stories, and I hate when a Part II falls flat.

And of course Baal is hot. Very hot. Didn't I see pics somewhere of Cliff Simon doing naughty things at a con? Man, he looked good.

I'm relieved my tv screen indicated that Zelenka is not definitively shorter than Weir.

But it would be kind of sweet if he were. (I've got about a half inch over my husband, and he always wants me to wear heels. *g*)

I like Bates. That was a good moment between him and Carson. He does seem to stay very calm in moments like that. I like that he's hardnosed and kind of abrasive, because it works for him. He always has a good reason to be. And yet he he handled Carson very well. He comes across as having much more experience than Ford.

So, okay, I love everyone in my shiny new show. *g*

That was a lovely moment, wasn't it? I love the way Sheppard does scared. He's always so laid back and cool, so when he gets scared, it's subtle, and I get scared for him, too. It's a great contrast to McKay's over-the-top reactions.

I have to admit, I liked Weir in this. I didn't see any harshness directed at Sheppard or McKay, just frustration at the situation. Sheppard's mission failed. They just got buzzed by a wraith dart, lost a pilot, and they really need a ZPM. I'm sure she was very much hoping they would come back with one.

I love the contrasts between Rodney and Shep in all ways. It's what makes them so good together.

I think it's all about the contrast and the conflict. THat's why I can actually see Shep and Weir together down the line and I really enjoy watching them together as well

I liked Weir. And I didn't think she was mad at them. Just too detached for my liking. Because I've seen her react otherwise.

But..really..I guess everyone was just stressing and trying to deal. It's great how SGA really SHOWS how this is wearing on everyone. Great continuity.

I'd be so freaked I'd probably be a big ole asshat like Kavanuagh. Although, realistically, what he says is sound. Just like Bates. Bates gets a bad rep but most of the time he's RIGHT in what he says to Shep. I love that conflict too.

Course, I don't want Shep to change. I like the reminderthat this is that Shep doesn't follow command chain/rules. He goes with instinct and heart. He's the guy you know will come back for you no matter what the odds.

Did I mention I adore Zalenka? And his crush on Weir is so cute. And real. I mean..yeah. This show is great for showing how REAL people are and flawed. HOT ZONE I loved because I think both Shep and Weir were both right and wrong.

So many eps just show how REAL these people are. They make mistakes. They get called on it. They move on. But best of all I love how they're a family community. It's awesome. It's made me really care whether they live or die.

Wow..I'm getting deep ::pets lovely show::

I enjoyed Reckoning 1, but felt it was too scattered and entirely a build up for the second part, which hopefully will not disappoint. Each of the team was off doing their own thing (which in Daniel's case is being tortured), and the storylines were only vaguely connected so each time we jumped to a new scene I had to reboot what the plotline for this character was.

I really enjoyed Ba'al's eye rolling and finger tapping. Most of the go'auld take themselves so very serious and are such drama queens, but here's this guy who killed Jack over and over and yet he's got a little of Jack's "here we go again" attitude and that makes me like him.

As for Brotherhood, hey, I grew up on indiana Jones - this type of ep always is enjoyable therefore. :) The odd thing is, I have to admit what I remember most is the fieldwork of the team, rather than what was going on back at Atlantis. Yet, I know the Wraith dart and deep space sensors are the most important part of the ep.

Clueless Rodney is pretty funny - when Allina said her eye was on something else and he looked around to see what, I laughed and laughed. See, Sheppard doesn't have much to be jealous about because Rodney just doesn't get it - even when offered to him on a silver tray with a sign saying "take me". But Sheppard just had to probe a little to be sure, which led to Rodney finding out Allina was interested and from then on Sheppard was on guard and watching closely over Rodney's bumbling flirtation.

I loved Rodney's little finger snapping to get the knife and the other ways in which he psychologically told Koyla just what he should do with himself. Koyla tortured him and killed Rodny's fellow Atlanteans, and Rodney is in his face despite that. That said, I'm also shallow enough to like Koyla in the long coat, and to think that he's also a smart guy who knows when things are his own fault and accepts it. That said, the Genii have serious issues with revenge - first Sora and now Koyla just take off on their own to get it, despite it not necessarily being the most strategic move.

I thought going back through the stargate to get the ZPM was pointless, because Allina said they were going to move it to another planet to hide it. Unless Atlantis goes the toture route, there's no way they could find it again. And I don't think their orders allowed for them to just grab their guns and start blasting when Allina took it from them initially. Plus, for Renaissance-era folk, their guns looked pretty advanced... If I were Atlantis teams, I'd automatically not trust anyone in Pegasus - they all have secrets.

The MENSA stuff was hysterical. Trust Rodney to suddenly tangent off into that when it was completely irrelevant to the situation. It's just another part of the Sheppard puzzle, and Rodney likes puzzles.

So, if I liked all these things, why didn't I enjoy the episode more?

Most of the eps this season have a piecemeal feeling to me. Certain scenes grab me, but overall... meh. But setting aside my bias for those certain scenes, I think Reckoning 2 is probably the best overall episode this season -- it's got good pacing, good music to help the pacing effect, and a pretty good story too.

The Brotherhood was brilliant. Rodney's doe-eyes at John with the angsty "I'm sorry" killed me, since I'm desperately trying not to get into that pairing. Dammit, I said I didn't understand why people saw the big gay love between them, and I will not recant!

I have to admit I got incredibly pissed off that they didn't get the ZPM. First of all, wtf? I felt like we, the audience, should have caught some sort of foreshadowing of their Big Guns, but all we got was McKay's little chat with the alien chippie. Hardly enough to warrant an ending like what they gave us--basically the entire episode was a waste. All that suspense for nothing. I'm convinced they'll start killing off main characters for fun just to make us cry.

Rodney whining about the bomb, however, completely made the episode worth every mini-heart attack I had. They have almost completely nailed writing that character--and David Hewlett is a minor god for his talent at portraying him. He shows layers. Like an onion. *tapes McKay to binder and draws little hearts around him* Such a wonderful little man.

Ah, one other thing. Who, um, is Markham? I mean, I totally recognize the name from fics and the show--but I have no clue which military guy he was. Help?

Jumping in here--I didn't think to compare Zelenka's height versus Weir's, but I'm surprised, truthfully, that he isn't shorter. Maybe it's just their personalities, but I always thought Zelenka was on the short side. (Doesn't the fandom make a lot of references to him being cute and little? Stress on the little?) Maybe Weir is secretly a midget.

Meh, whatever.

I love the way Atlantis is tackling the relations between the scientists/civilians and the military. It shows so much more depth and realism than SG-1 does, usually. Characters learn from their mistakes on SGA, they learn to better interact with people very different from them. Bates is a great example of this.

heya hon,

I've missed you. ::sniff::

I want to say something intelligent, but I think I left my intelligence somewhere over the Mississippi.

While watching "Sanctuary" on Friday , I found myself expecting John and Rodney to share a brief, fierce kiss before Kolya had Rodney raised out of the well. I really did. The way they were standing, the intensity of the exchange...

Just thinking about it is making me smile. And I'm smiling in Philly. Of course it is the City of Brotherly Love.

Brotherhood was definintely fun, wasn't it?

I loved Rodney's little finger snapping to get the knife

Oh, it was just perfect. Along with the line "You have *guns*". I love how he deals with Kolya in this ep. And yes, that man did look lovely in the long coat. I hope we see him again.

I guess you're right about the ZPM. Still, I was so frustrated!

Ooooh, a very belated thank you for the pointer. *g* I'm definitely going over to take a peek.

A very belated response! I think LJ has been holding out on me with comment notifications. ::glares::

But yeah, what you said. Rodney whining in this ep was perfectly in character. And hilarious.

*tapes McKay to binder and draws little hearts around him* Such a wonderful little man.

Yup, that's about where I'm at with him, too.*g* Even though the show is full of the big gay love. ::happy sigh::

A rather overly late response (glares at LJ) but you were absolutely right, Reckoning 2 had it all over Reckoning 1. Which is odd, because SG1's history is the opposite--dynamite first parters, with lame follow-ups.

I hadn't connected with that bit, but you're right. SG1 usually does great build up in the first part, then completely fails in the second. It will be interesting to see how things go next season, since it appears they're going to attempt some three-parters.
