Icon prompts!

I feel like writing but I'm all aimless and unfocused. ::flails:: It's the holidays. Too much stuff going on. Although, not really--I'm not very busy this week. I think it's the thinking about having stuff to do in the future that is distracting me. How silly is that?

So anyway, I'm calling for icon prompts. The way it works is:

1. You post a comment.

2. I'll write a SGA drabble/ficlet inspired by the icon you've used.

Because I love icons. Icons are such happy things. I think everyone should do this meme in their own journals. ::eyes flist:: And yes, by everyone, I mean YOU.

John has always played it safe. He had been accused of recklessness by his by his superiors, sure, but that was in the field. He can take chances there. But not in his personal life. Not with Rodney. With Rodney, John needs to keep a safe distance. He needs to ignore basic facts like the back of Rodney's neck looking soft and vulnerable. Or how open his face is--utterly transparent, every single emotion shining from his eyes. Or the quickness of his hands, the lift of his chin, the way he can fold his arms against his broad chest and glare, challenging John about everything, from the relative worth of their favorite superheroes to American politics to whether they're all about to die horrible, fiery deaths within the next minute.

And if John's fingers itch to touch Rodney, John simply clenches his hands into fists and wills the urge away.

But Rodney is always there, always next to him, leaning into his space, simply being present in his room-filling Rodney way. He's always focused on John, bitching at him, rambling at him, asking questions, demanding answers, absorbing all of John's attention and sure, maybe it's because John follows Rodney into his lab, into the mess out and onto balconies but he can't help himself. Same way he can't help teasing Rodney, doing anything he can just to get a reaction.

Sometimes John lies in bed at night wondering just what hell he's doing. And vows to go back to keeping his distance, for real this time.

A vow he conveniently forgets the very next morning.

Rodney has that effect on him.

In the end, it's John who brings about his own undoing. A harrowing experience at the hands of unfriendly villagers, and when it's all over John finds Rodney, safe and unharmed and he can't help but pull Rodney into a fierce hug. It's intended to be brief, manly back-patting sort of hug but once John's arms are around him they get kind of stuck. The hug goes on too long. Still, it's a minor miracle, Rodney alive and breathing and John is shaky with relief. And not thinking clearly. But it's not like Rodney is struggling to get away. He's hugging John back, fingers digging into John's shoulder as he holds on.

The seconds tick by, and John begins to panic just a little because Rodney still isn't letting go. Neither is he. He might actually be holding Rodney tighter. He can feel the warmth of Rodney's body against chest, can feel it rise and fall with every breath.

Rodney's hair is soft. John knows this because his nose is pressed into it.

It smells nice, too.

John thinks that maybe he should say something. But he doesn't know what. 'Thank god you're okay' might be a little silly at this point. 'Sorry about the kidnapping' would be stating the oblivious.

But if he doesn't say something, they might stay like this for hours. Which wouldn't really be such a terrible thing.

John takes a breath and is about to speak when Rodney beats him to it.

"Oh, for christssakes," he says, pulling back without releasing his grip on John.

And before John can even raise his eyebrows Rodney kisses him. It's a defiant kiss, daring John to stop him, but John isn't stupid. He throws caution into the wind and kisses Rodney back.

Recklessly.

This is so much my kind of fic and I love that in canon they often seem to be just a little push away from taking that extra step. There are these moments where I'm almost surprised they don't actually hug and kiss like this.

This is Rodney and John moving ever closer to each other, watching Rodney through John's eyes, feeling John trying to hold back but not really succeeding. I smiled through it all and that hug and kiss made me sigh in delight.

Thank you! It's got quite a number of specific things in there that I mentioned I specifically love, so either you and I feel the same way or you've put them there intentionally. Or maybe both :D

Oh yay! Thank you! I'm so tickled that you liked it. I think we're totally on the same page when it comes to how they are together. I love that there's so much understated affection between them on-screen, and yes, sometimes it really does seem like they're only a few seconds away from nuzzling in for a kiss.

Especially after watching "Echoes". *g*
