Prehistoric Mystery Organism Verified As Giant Fungus.
A twenty foot tall fungus! How fabulous is that? It promptly brought to mind what might be the creepiest short story I have ever read--"Fungus Isle" by Philip M. Fisher, originally published in 1923 but we have in an anthology somewhere. Story gave me the willies for weeks.
Team Sheppard needs to visit a prehistoric planet with giant things. Like fungi. And bugs. Giant, prehistoric bugs.

Date: 2007-04-24 04:23 pm (UTC)OTOH...there's a story out there that has just this idea. Shep's team visits a planet, and it's barren but for some weird structures, plus some sort of powdery stuff (if memory serves, which it may not, accurately.) I believe that they/some of them end up turning into some kind of fungus, literally a transformation, and it does turn out good in the end, although it's close.
Do you recall that story? Does anyone? It was good.

Date: 2007-04-24 04:49 pm (UTC)So, yay for re-reading! Seriously, it's an outstanding story, and I would say that even if I didn't know Auburn. Fantastic Sci-Fi, and the characters are spot-on.

Date: 2007-04-24 05:02 pm (UTC)I went on the hunt for it almost a year after I had read it for the first time because it was just so, so, so good and the memory of the taste-testing alone was enough to make me incredibly happy.

Seriously, you may just have to write that..but no pressure though.
