A few thoughts on Travelers

I really had pretty low expectations going into this ep, so I was surprised to find myself enjoying it. I thought JF had some decent chemistry with the Traveler chick (Larrin?) as opposed to every other alien space woman he's been paired up with. I ended up kind of liking her. She was an ass most of the time and not particularly sympathetic. A big improvement over flowy ascended or almost-ascended women. Or maybe I just get a kick out of John Sheppard being kissed and then stunned. Probably what it felt like the first time he kissed Rodney. *g*

Speaking of which, I enjoyed the ep being bookended with pissy!Rodney. That was kind of fun.

The good stuff:
John eating an apple in the puddlejumper.
Throwpillows.
John sprawling on the prison bed in a sprawly John kind of way.
John stealing the warship. Go John!
John fixing the weapons chair thingy. I like smart John.
Morse code!
John bluffing the wraith with the empty gun.
The team searching for John.
The funny little face John made when he said his people will come looking for him. He's still kind of sulky about the whole time-dilation incident.
The entire final scene. Ronon waving around meat on a fork, John digging into his food, Rodney being delightfully pissy. And Teyla rolling her eyes.

The not-so-good:
The heavy-handed Romantic Comedy Moments. I know, I know, Stargate isn't known for being subtle, but still, that hiding-in-the-closet bit was over the top, even by their standards.

So, all in all, kind of fun, and John was very pretty. Now, can we get back to the team episodes?

God, John being smart is so fucking hot. Fixing things! He's been taking lessons from Rodney! Although how he concentrates if Rodney's in the T-shirt of hotness, I have no idea.

I wasn't a fan of the chick or the forced romcom, but so many little (gay) moments. :)

*nods* He'll be all "and I did it with the Wraith bearing down on us! With a bruised jaw. Keller says there was a possibility I was concussed!". And Rodney will roll his eyes and launch into his "please, when you manage to..." all while being secretly proud of (and turned on by) his brainy boyfriend. :D

The closet didn't bother me because I didn't even recognize it as a rom-com moment. What bothered me was my friends who know I'm a McShepper making seven minutes in heaven comments.

Mostly I just thought the Traveler chick (and her people, too) was a dumbass. 'You're awesome and fight the Wraith, so we thought we'd... you know, disable your ship, kidnap you and just generally get the Lanteans pissed at us.'

The closet bit got a little too silly for me, considering the situation.

And I think it's pretty clear that the Travelers need to work on their people skills. They're clearly pretty xenophobic, which I suppose has worked for them in the past--they've done better than any other group of folks out there when it comes to hiding from the wraith.

I had pretty high expectations for this one and I was a little disappointed. What you said about the heavy handed Romance was so true. It was too much. And yeah, I liked Larrin better than the other women Sheppard's been forced to interact with.

I liked that the kiss was just to distract him though, plus at aleast this one wasn't boring as all hell..but still, this one gets points for obviously pissy jealous Rodney who couldn't even eat his meal because he was so obsessed with John and that woman..John will have to pay for this, oh yes, yes he will..I could see the wheels turning in Rodney's head...plus, he was so pissed he even mentioned it infront of the team..not like they don't know already thought. ;)

I was so relieved that the kiss was a fake-out. Because if she had gone all swoony over him it would have been very irritating.

I didn't mind the Romantic Comedy moments, mostly because they didn't play particularly romantic to me. I mean, I did like the two of them together as on-again off-again reluctant allies. I didn't see much romance between them, and that really worked for me.

Plus John got to be John, in all of his sarcastic, quirky, goofy glory. So I was happy, especially on second viewing, when I could ignore the awkward exposition bits. ::g::

You're right, it didn't come off as particularly romantic, which I liked. They were much more adversarial than I expected. Thank goodness. *g* It made for an entertaining show, especially with John being all goofy and John-like. Hee!

I agree with crysothemis it was good to see John being John, and so much of John being John. He talked so much in this ep, it almost got on my nerves (I know, I know, not possible, but you know what I mean). Also, loved the look on his face when he was served the food and took a drink of whatever it was. And pissy!Rodney I thought was great at the end being pissy and taking note of Ronon's table manners, but one thing gets me, Rodney is a Ph.D., a genius and the only word in his vocabulary he uses to differentiate between women is "hot?" I just don't buy it, it gets old - although he did use the word "sexy" alien tonight. Nevertheless, that final scene had me giggling and the topper was the Teyla "eye roll" - priceless.

As for Larrin - I kind of liked her, she was doing what she had to do, just like John would. I was relieved, though, that the kiss was a fake out. The closet scene? Yes, a little much.

I swear, I think my favorite thing was the "throw pillow" line. Men say "cushions" or just "pillows" - totally cracked me up.

He did talk a lot! That was very cool. Complete sentences! So many words! With the cute little faces! Especially the icky drink face! I caught that too. It was perfectly timed.

And something about Rodney saying "hot" in reference to women makes me giggle each and every time. I guess he saves words like "pretty" for John.

I had really high expectations for this ep... call me an optimist... so I was a bit disappointed.

But hey, I love John sprawled out on the jail bed/mattress, John with cuts on his lip and face, John getting beat up by a girl, smart John, the team looking sad when they thought they'd lost him and yes, pissy Rodney!

Rodney and Teyla in those jackets really made me squee! :D

Rodney being all pissy and knowing John well enough to know he was hiding something - delightful. Ronon's glee - lovely!

Oh, I left out sexy John on his knees... again! :D

The romantic moments really didn't come across as Romantic to me. Maybe because I always expected her to betray John so I sort of saw her as acting out.

I'm still deciding if I like Larrin or not. She seemed very pissy and at times annoyed me. But I tried to see things from her view...

Hmm, next week's ep looks good! :D

It was fun having so much John in an ep. He's not just leaning on stuff in the background.

And it is very cool that Rodney can spot John hiding something. He may not be good with people, but he's good with John. *g*

I know what you mean about Larrin. I don't think she was supposed to be entirely sympathetic. They went about things the wrong way, and she was a jerk, but she had her reasons, which were very much misguided. I think she was an interesting character, and it's nice to have one of those be a woman for a change.

I think this may be my favorite non-Rodney-generated event that has ever happened on SGA, I'm not even kidding. I don't know why, I totally expected John to know Morse code, but--but--IT'S SO AWESOME.

Now I want a story where John expresses all feelings more complex than, "Time for lunch," by tapping them out on members of his team.

I think if they spent any time together John and Larrin would become friends, like he and Teyla did. Whatever spark of attraction there is would fade for the most part. Although I honestly didn't see it, even though at least seeing him on screen with her wasn't painful. The scene in the closet didn't feel romantic or even sexually tense to me.

Or maybe I just don't get het sexual tension any more. /g/

What I was disappointed in was that Rodney didn't get to rescue John. I wanted the team to show up, Rodney to take charge of fixing the ship, dismissing Larrin's knowlege of hyperdrives completely, while placing himself firmly between John and Larrin. John would naturally just lean back and smirk the entire time.

Someone totally needs to write an alternate ending where that happens.

I was hoping that Rodney and team would get to rescue John, too. That would have been very fun. Although I did appreciate that John talked his way out in the end, because that is a very John thing to do.
