So, I'm a little puzzled over some of this Stargate/Atlantis backstory stuff with the Ancients. Probably has something to do with the fact that I missed a few eps of Season 6.
So, what killed off all the ancients anyway? Was it the Wraith, or was it a virus (i.e. "Frozen")? And did they all ascend instead of die?
I'm confuuuuuuused. And whiny about my business trip tomorrow, because I will be without my computer for two whole days. ::sighs::
And my foot hurts. And there's no good coffee where I'm going.
Okay, I'll stop now.

A plague started sweeping through the galaxy, so they branched out to another.
The Wraith attacked in the other, so they retreated to Earth, where those who didn't learn to ascend died.
There are probably lines in eps that contradict that, but it's the best synthesis I've been able to come up with. lol

Date: 2004-07-18 11:25 am (UTC)We also know now from Atlantis that those who escaped plague-free were wiped out by the Wraith, and that the few who escaped from *that* returned to Earth. I'm assuming that those last few were the ones who ascended; they probably returned to Earth far enough after the fact that they weren't exposed to the plague. But there couldn't have been many of them left.
What intrigues me there is -- how many Ancients are there, now? Not counting ascended beings like the Abydonians; they are ascended, but not of the actual Ancients' race. And can they die, in their incorporeal form? So many questions, so few answers.

Date: 2004-07-18 12:56 pm (UTC)Hey, that did make me feel better. And I'm taking a large thermos filled with my OWN coffee on the trip.
Things are looking up.

Another country heard from
Date: 2004-07-19 12:19 pm (UTC)Okay, my take:
We know the Ancients left "this region of space" long ago (The Fifth Race); they had outposts (The Lost City) and colonies (Window of Opportunity) and set up a network of Stargates; they were most likely wiped out by illness (Frozen), although some of them managed to find another plane of existance and become the Ascended (Full Circle). It's possible, but not certain, that they evolved on Earth, since Dr. Beckett said we evolved independent of them (meaning humans are not distant cousins of the Ancients). Atlantis may have simply been a large, city-sized colony.
So, the only timeline that makes sense to me has the Ancients being wiped out by a galaxy-wide plague; some of them managed to ascend, and some of them died. The non-infected decided to fly Atlantis to another galaxy and start fresh. Unfortunately, they found a new foe in the Wraith, and were "defeated" a second time.
How's that sound?

Date: 2004-07-20 09:08 am (UTC)Can't answer your question, I'm afraid, 'cause I too am confuzzled on the whole Earth humans/Ancients/Ascended thing. Methinks a bit of revisionist canon might be going on.

Date: 2004-07-21 06:32 am (UTC)I don't think TPTB have really thought out the storyline...and of course, there could have been so many Ancients that they all met completely different fates. Orlin doesn't say he's ever been to Earth when he's there with Sam.

Re: Another country heard from
Date: 2004-07-21 06:42 am (UTC)I'm hoping this gets explained to some extent in the series. Or, at least, the characters scratch their heads about it, too.

Date: 2004-07-21 06:45 am (UTC)I thing Revisionist Canon might be happening, too. And I'm okay with that, really, as long as it's not too blatant. I'll still enjoy the show. I just want it to sort of make sense.
