I wrote a little [livejournal.com profile] mcsmooch fic earlier today called Evening Song, which was a total indulgence of my need for future fic schmoopiness. It's the kind of thing that makes me very very happy to think about.

Which came in handy today since I then ventured out to buy new clothes for work. Only to find that cute summer blouses STILL do not button properly over my chest, and those adorable empire-waist tops still sit too high on my somewhat ample bosom (I wear only a C-cup! Really! ...okay, sometimes D, depending on the brand). I know those seams are meant to go under the breasts, not across the middle. So not flattering. Apparently I am still taller and broader in the shoulder than the average woman. I suppose if I were ambitious I'd buy extra large shirts and tailor them to fit, but that would involve things like sewing, which I do not do.

So many pretty shirts out there, all on sale for ridiculously low prices, and I can't get a damn thing to fit. Aside from your basic t-shirt style shirt. Which I already plenty of.

However, I did get a swimsuit on sale at Kohl's for $30. Woo! It's one of those two piece tankini things, with the little skirt attached to the bottom piece. So cute! And on sale!

Who needs grownup work clothes, anyway?

asd;lkdjfl;kjdf I know exactly what you mean!!!!! I always have to buy shirts a size up because of my shoulders (I am just a C-cup too), and they always look loose and vaguely tent-like around my waist.

It's all just so wrong, isn't it? We don't want shapeless tents! We just want to have a shape!

I has a shape! It is called shoulders and boobs and hips asdlkjdfl;jdflkjf I have been slowly slowly losing weight, and I find that the ability to wear more flattering clothes has not materialized with respect to tops just because my shoulders, there is no shrinking them. Or the chest, either.

I don't have to dress up often (yet asd;lkjdf) but still, I'd like to have my students paying attention to me and not the gap in my blouse.

Yay for losing weight! I've lost a bit, although I think it's creeping back up on me. Eeek! But even in my youthful, skinner days of yore, finding clothes that fit and flattered my curves was very difficult. I have hips, yes, and a chest, yes, but there's a waist in between why is that so hard to work with? I thought that was what we were supposed to look like?

I have exactly two blouses in my closet. One is crinkly with the pleats so it fits to my body, the other drapes nicely enough that the fact it's rather huge around my waist isn't that noticeable. But I have to wear a boob-smooshy bra with both. ::sighs::

And students do like to stare everywhere they shouldn't, don't they?

Granted, I'm pretty damned busty, but I hate that clothes are made for girls with little to no shape! Is it too much to ask for a shirt that fits curves? I guess it is. Because of that, I'm t-shirt girl too.

At least I wear scrubs for work, so I don't need grownup clothes.

YAYYY for cute tankini! And at a great price, too! So the shopping day wasn't a total loss for you. :)

Curves! Is that totally unheard of or what? So much stuff is either way too clingy (I am so not in my 20's anymore) or just big and square and boxy (I'm not a senior citizen, either).

Lucky you, wearing scrubs. I really don't have to dress much for work, it's a very casual office. I can wear jeans but I'm just tired of all the boring shirts in my closet. ::sighs::

But you're right, finding a new swimsuit and getting it on sale is a very special occasion. *g*

So much word. I usually resort to two or three safety pins to keep from looking ridiculous. Or, you know, flashing my underwear. *facepalm*

There's nothing like having that great big gap that says 'hey, look inside for a special prize!' *g*

Blouses and me so don't get along.

Ugh, this is why I make my own clothes. I'm basically a stick, and nothing fits me either!

OTOH yay! Swimsuits!

Oooh, you definitely have magical powers. My sisters sew, but I'm all eeee! Cutting! Pinning!! WTF?

Don't you do beadwork? (I seem to remember seeing an etsy post?) Believe me, making a dress is a walk in the park compated to learning how to peyote stitch!

Date: 2008-06-15 04:48 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile] thegrrrl2002.livejournal.com
Nope, I refuse to believe that. *g* Peyote stitch is nothing, believe me. And my favorite kind is free-form, where you just bead away and let it take any shape that it wants to. I don't think I can do that with a dress.

Plus, whenever I get near a sewing machine, it growls at me. Honest. ::is scared::

Dude, as a woman with a Triple D chest and wider than average shoulders, I feel your pain. I do suggest going to Avenue.com to look at their clothing. It is all stuff for the not-tiny women of the world. And most of it is absolutely wonderful (in both the style sense and the quality sense). ^^

Oh yes, I've seen the shops and they have great clothes (acknowledging that women with curves, OMG!), but 14 is usually too big on me. I probably should try them though, you never know what is going to fit!

I AGREE. I've been googling and googling for somewhere to buy shirts that fit women with curves. I found a place in England that sells shirts sized two ways: regular size plus breast size -- regular, curvy, really curvy. But that's in England! RAWRRR!

Thank goodness for bras that squish.

Oooh, what a fabulous idea that is! Curvy shirts! *g* Maybe someone will sell them here.

Actually, in the Sears near me, they used to carry a "Latino" clothing line that's intended for curvy woman. While the stereotyping made me cringe, the styles were very fun and fit pretty well. I haven't seen it in the store lately so I think they discontinued it. ::sighs::

Oh, I totally hear you about the shirts. Apparently women don't have broad shoulders-I can't ever find button up shirts that don't look completely stupid.

From: [identity profile] thegrrrl2002.livejournal.com
It's so sad, isn't it? I rarely even bother to try them on anymore, except when somehow I feel that I can make them fit by sheer force of will.

Doesn't work though. ::sighs::

Oh yeah, I don't go near them, either. *frowns at clothing people*

The only way a button-up shirt doesn't gap is if you wear a "minimizer" bra. I wore them for years but finally got fed up with the tightness and the pinching and binding and now I wear what's comfortable. I guess I'm in the minority that doesn't think those new empire-waist tops are cute. They look good on the hanger but not on anyone.

From: [identity profile] thegrrrl2002.livejournal.com
I used to have a few that I wore with minimizer bras, way back when, but you're right, they're still not comfortable. I've long given up on wearing uncomfortable clothes. There's just no point in it.

I do like the empire-waist tops, as long as they fit the person properly. They can be quite flattering. Unless it's a forty year old woman wearing a style that's intended for teenagers. Then it's just cringe-inducing. I'm seeing way way too much of that.

I agree 100%.

ALL of those empire-waist tops hit me mid boob too :( It's like argh! And yea, gaps in buttons in the middle of the boobs. *sigh* Its so bad, I don't even get tops with buttons down the front anymore.

Buttons are the work of the devil. ::nods::

I'm glad I'm not the only one with all these problems wearing clothes. I was starting to wonder if I was freak of nature of something. *g*

You know what I'm (not so) secretly thinking? I'm thinking that all those pretty shirts out there "on sale" are on sale for those low prices just because they can't find someone who actually *fits* into these clothes. *ggg*

"Evening song"? Makes me so happy! I'm a sucker for this kind of "never thought we would make it but hey, here we are"-future fic. :-) They're so *at home* in Atlantis in this story, it's wonderful. Somehow, having John taken the city to new planets for four times enhances the feeling of being at home in *Atlantis*, not on a certain planet. :-)

Hah! I think you're on to something there! There's a reason why clothes end up on the bargain racks, and maybe it's not only the bad economy. *g*

And thank you so much - I'm glad you liked the fic! I do love the thought of them growing old and crotchety together. And still having lots of sex.

I think John likes flying the city around, too. He thinks of it as a really big Winnebago. *g*

It took me a couple days to track down this entry:

For years, I fretted about being judged out of touch, provincial, frumpy, etc., if I didn’t try to keep up with current trends. Yet the inescapable fact is, unless you are built like a model — and there’s a reason why they say models are meant to be “hangers” — you will look like an idiot in at least 50% of current trends (http://kateharding.net/2007/07/04/i-love-fashion-except-for-the-fashion-part)

If you aren't reading Kate Harding, you are missing a lot. ;)

I have read some of her stuff, it is wonderful! Thank you for the reminder.

Actually, one of things I adore is "What Not To Wear" because it made me realize the clothes are wrong, not me. Everyone ends up looking fantastic on that show (IMHO) no matter what their shape is. It's just that finding the right clothes can just be exhausting sometimes, especially when a big fashion trend doesn't work for you.

My oldest sister, on the other hand, has the perfect body for those darling little tops. It's just so not right. ::sulks::
