Another happy Friday night viewing. I had a few issues with both eps, but on the whole, found both very enjoyable. And, er, Sheppard/McKay! I so feel the love. Feet and all.

Icon

You know, in the Gateworld spoilers I read something about Daniel speaking Japanese in this ep. Clearly they decided to back off that whole theme. Anyway, I did like several aspects of this ep. The flashback storytelling style is one of them. Sometimes that can fall really flat, but this time it made a somewhat routine story interesting to watch. The story this time was more about the people of the planet they are visiting (I forget the name) than about SG1, but it worked for me. I got caught up in their story, and thought there was some pretty strong acting by the guest stars, particularly Jared. I found myself really liking him. The 'religious zealot' storyline was effective, I thought, and Teal'c! Teal'c got to be knowledgeable and forceful and to speak his mind. With General O'Niell encouraging him.

Speaking of General O'Neill, he just wanted his Daniel back, didn't he? I could feel his frustration and helplessness. And the whole 'when things get squirrelly' bit was sweet. Daniel, on the other hand, really didn't get a whole lot to do in this ep. There was some nice hurt/comfort going on, but not with Jack, damn it. He certainly got to look pretty, and that leather jacket was a quite nice addition. He was earnest, he was concerned and all that, but there was no huge dilemma for him to deal with. I did like his scenes with Jared. Did I mention that I liked Jared? I really did.

I also dug the look of this episode, I mean, yeah, WWII and all that, but the cold war stuff down in the bunker was kind of creepy I thought. I used to have nightmares about nuclear war when I was a kid, so that kind of brought it all back to me.

Suspicion

Okay. So now I'm not convinced that either woman is in charge. Sheesh. That really bugged me. Weir let that Lieutenant(?) walk all over her in those interviews, and while I'd like to think it was her idea of a good cop/bad cop strategy, I know it wasn't. She came off looking ineffective and uncertain, and I hated that. I do like the character, but they really need to work on her leadership style. Same with Teyla. She's the leader of her people? What? Give me some evidence of that. Because I see none. None of the people from Earth treat her that way, and neither do her own people. She's a character without a purpose.

The storyline was interesting enough. I liked the bit about the necklace. I suspected it would turn out to be some sort of technological type of thing, where no one would actually be a spy. I thought it was rather premature of Weir to jump to that conclusion so quickly, considering that there's all sorts of technology there that they don't understand. And also, what would the spy have to gain by it? But okay, it was a plot device, and it made for a decent episode. I have to say I'm glad Teyla's people are out of the city, and out on the planet. They're dull.

Now, for the shallow stuff. McKay! McKay! Poor baby, he gets shot right in the face. Sheppard has to run to his side and fuss over him. Then linger by his bed in the infirmary and look concerned, then give him the eyebrow when Wier calls him away. See, they have a sekrit code already. Not only that, we get to see that McKay has all sorts of fuzzy curly chest hair peeking out from his shirt. Plus, that whole bit about McKay being nervous? Adorable. Sheppard knows just how to handle him. There's so much potential there. I've also decided that Sheppard is drop-dead sexy when he's taunting a caged Wraith. I'm liking the character, liking him a lot. He's making me look a turkey sandwiches in a whole new light.

Must re-watch episode.

I have to confess, the first thing that the Big Board made me think of was War Games. "Do you want to play Global Thermonuclear War?"

LOL!! You know, I hadn't thought of that while I was watching. But now I can't stop giggling!

Well, that too. I'm better with random 80s movies than classics, though.

War Games...

Aw, with that cute baby Matthew Broderick. I hadn't thought of that, but I like it much better.

I think the majority of my LJ flist is liking Icon more than I did, but you and I seem to have some similar impressions about Suspicion. Yay, similarity! *g*

And McKay...mmmmmmm.

Yes, we did zero right in on the same aspects of "Suspicion"! We are of the same mind. We are one. At least when it comes to Atlantis, and women acting like real people. Let's make a trip to Vancouver and smack some writers heads around, okay? We'll show them who's in charge. *g* Yes, I'm punchy this morning. Too much beer last night, and too much coffee this morning. Scary thing is, too much beer was like, three beers this time. Pathetic, I know.

As for Icon, well, I suspect I'm easily amused. I think that while it wasn't a great SG1 episode, it was an interesting hour of television for me. And hey, where are all the post-ep fics? The ones with all the sex? ::taps foot impatiently::

Er, yes, well...if we ever end up at a con together? Talk to me after I've had a couple Long Island Iced Teas :).

Ummmm...aren't *you* writing them? *g* *ducks and runs*

Eeep! I think I'm on fic overload. My brain is packed full, even though I have visions of Jack asking Daniel, "What part of 'squirrelly' don't you understand?"

Word! *g*

That scene in O'Neill's office was great. The way Teal'c just sat down and Jack was obviously used enough to people standing until he sits down that he was surprised. And then the way he blew up for a second.

I liked the ep, the flashbacks didn't bother me (fairly unusual for me), and the actors were strong.

Atlantis...I had reservations about some things, such as Weir giving Bates implicit permision to walk all over her in the 'interviews'. Teyla was okay, I thought, in this episode. At least we got to see her fight -- not a helpless female anymore -- and she had a nice moment talking to Jesus of Athosia (credit for the nickname goes to [livejournal.com profile] thewildmole).
Of course, in the end it only bore watching for the men. Sheppard was in command mode -- loved that! McKay -- absolutely adorable. The way Sheppard called Ford a "little boy" was cute, too.

I particularly liked the end scene, when Sheppard is taunting the Wraith. The way it was shot, with Sheppard coming in and out of the light, not to mention the darkness of that general area, whereas the rest of Atlantis is all sweetness and light pink, emphasized the darkness of the entire situation. I wonder where they'll go with this prisoner scene. Certainly the way they will handle him will shed a lot of light on their personalities.

The way Teal'c just sat down

That was such a cute little moment. It came across very real and natural. I'm just lovin' General Jack. Especially when he says things like "FIND IT!". Because he's so worried about his Daniel.

And Bates! That was his name. Yeah, if I were Weir I would have slapped him down in a second. She should have been running the show with those interviews. It was actually painful to watch. I've been in enough business meetings (and scientific conventions) where women get talked over all the time, and it bugs the hell out of me.

I think I know what bugs me about Teyla, too. She smiles too much. Or maybe just at the wrong moments. It comes across to me as being appeasing, when she shouldn't be.
