Five Things You May Not Know About My Time in School are:
1. My third grade teacher made all the girls in class who were wearing pants stand on one side of the room, and the ones in skirts stand on the other side, just to make the point that the girls in skirts were dressed oh so properly. I was wearing a culotte, so I got put on the skirt side, but I felt like I really had gotten away with something.
2. My father died during the summer between 5th and 6th grade, and I suffered from severe depression for nearly a year afterwards. It went undiagnosed (this was in the early 70's), and I had no idea what was wrong with me.
3. I took only one science course in high school--basic biology. Tried to take physics but it was canceled.
4. While I love science, microbiology in particular, it's entirely possible that I went to grad school only because I wouldn't have to move back home to live with my mother and step-father.
5. I taught a pollution microbiology lab while I was working on my MS degree. It involved much collecting and sampling of raw sewage. The term 'brown canoe' still makes me giggle.
Five Things You May Not Know About the Job (Jobs) I Have (or Had) are:
1. I worked at McDonald's throughout high school. I loved it. All my friends worked there, too. I worked the grill, and especially enjoyed the breakfast run.
2. I spent one summer while in grad school grubbing for beetle larvae and making laughing gull chicks throw up. Seriously. I was a research assistant for my roommate, who was an ecology major. We needed to examine the stomach contents of the chicks. Damn, they were cute. But very hard to catch once they got older and began running around.
3. I spent a six months working in the QA lab of a large pharmaceutical company, which only confirmed my desire to go back to school for my Ph. D.
4. I had the best Ph. D. advisor ever.
5. I don't regret leaving academia behind.
Five Things You May Not Know About My Online Life are:
1. I still occasionally log onto an old account with a UNIX box and surf around using lynx. I'm really a text-based, command-line kind of girl at heart.
2. I sort of miss usenet and tin.
3. I had a vax account in grad school and used it for DNA sequence analysis. That so was not fun.
4. I used to post regularly to the bionet groups.
5. I sometimes check out on-line porn, but I keep thinking 'jeeze, she looks so bored, are guys really into this stuff?'

1. Those cute little townhouses down the street from me? The ones I would love to buy? They go for $650K. (Crosses those off the list).
2. We have a nest of cicada-killer wasps living in the courtyard of our apartment building. They're the size of sparrows. Very impressive when they come flying out of their burrows. More like lumbering than flying.
3. There are four very good Thai restaurants within a four-block radius of our apartment. I'm expecting one to open up in my kitchen any minute.
4. I still get a kick out of seeing black squirrels. They're just like the gray ones, but black. Cool!
5. Hmmm, city stuff: The Hostess Twinkie was invented here in 1930. Cracker Jacks were invented in 1893. And the steel frame skyscraper in 1885.
Five Things You May Not Know About My Core Personality are:
1. I used to be much more driven and ambitious. But I'm lazy and tend to daydream, and that caused much internal conflict. I have now embraced the laziness, and given up on the ambitious thing. You know? I'm much happier now. I'm pretty sure I was ambitious only because I thought I was supposed to be.
2. I was extremely introverted as a child. Now, not so much.
3. I want to be a nice person, but I don't think I always am.
4. People (friends and acquaintances) seem to like talking to me, and tend to tell me their problems. I find it difficult to the same with them. I keep most people at arm's length.
5. I have never, not once, ever wanted to have children.
Five Things You May Not Know About My Home Life are:
1. I like to drink coffee in bed. So does my husband. See? A match made in heaven. See laziness reference above.
2. Regarding the coffee (and tea)--I have several favorite mugs, and very specific mug preferences, depending on my mood. Husband will ask to make sure he uses the right one when he's making me tea or a cuppa joe.
3. I've given up on putting flat sheets on the bed, because I tuck the corners in, and husband untucks them. So--we just make do with the comforter.
4. I get panicky if there's no bread in the house. I love toast.
5. I leave water glasses in every room of the apartment.
Five Things You May Not Know that I Desperately Want are:
1. A condo. Or a little house, in the same neighborhood I live in now. We're going to start looking seriously in the spring. Much anxiety involved.
2. The ability to do a really good stomach undulation. I practice, practice, practice, but you know? It's just not pretty. Or big. (In, in, out, out. In, in, out, out. In, in, out, out.)
3. Shoes. Lots of shoes. Pretty shoes, fun shoes, colorful shoes. After almost 15 years of lab work and sampling in the mud, I now work in an office and dress like a grown up. Who knew it could be so much fun?
4. To convince my husband to get a new pair of glasses. (Honey, those frames are *so* 80's.) They may have to meet with an unfortunate accident.
5. For my company to not relocate to the suburbs, thus giving me an awful commute. I don't care if space is more expensive here in the city--it's all about me, damn it!

Okay, I have nothing. I don't think I'm really embarrassed about anything fannish, because you're all fannish with me. Except maybe that I've read and really enjoyed L&O Ben Stone/Mike Logan slash.
Five Things You May Not Know About What I Do in a Typical Day are:
1. Either check my to-do list, or write up a new one. I'm quite organized at work, really.
2. E-mail my sisters.
3. Think about what I'm going to cook for dinner. Or, conversely, come up with a good reason why we should go out to dinner.
4. Look out the window of our office suite and think "weee! I'm on the 20th floor!"
5. Watch some incarnation of Law and Order. But I can't seem to find Ben Stone anywhere lately. Oh Ben, where have you gone?

1. I like my body much better now than I did when I was twenty, even though I was much skinnier back then, and firmer.
2. I started belly dancing and writing slash when I turned 40. Those are two things I would have never dreamed of being able to do when I was younger. I'm enjoying both enormously. And still kind of amazed that I can do both somewhat half-decently. Can it be true that life really does begin at 40?

Date: 2004-09-08 10:38 am (UTC)Thank you for saying that, I was beginning to think that I'm the only one. Everyone around me is making plans for family, and I just don't want my own children. I like children, but I don't need them to be my own.

Lol! Mugs are so important! How come people don't understand that you can't drink coffee from the tea mug, or hot chocolate from the coffee mug, or - the worst - water from any mug? I'm so with you on that. *g*

I used to do that, but now I drink water just straight from the bottle. There are half-drunk water bottles all over my place. I never leave the house without a water bottle.

Date: 2004-09-08 10:59 am (UTC)My current favorite mug is green and has brightly colored shoes all over it. It is known as The Shoesy Mug, and reigns supreme. But alas, it's not always clean. I used to have a mug with a moose on it, but it broke. ::sniffs::
Water bottles, hee! But water bottles aren't half as fun, because then my husband can't complain about having to fit them all in the dishwasher. (I cook, he does clean-up). He's threatened to buy plastic cups, but I told him I refuse to drink out of such things.
Regarding children, at this point in my life all my close friends are childless, which I guess is a natural thing, we have much more in common. And when I was in grad school, all the male students, professors and postdocs were having kids, but you know, it really doesn't have quite the same impact on them. Most of the female students, etc were childless.

And my favourite tea mug shows a cow in a hammock saying:"I'm an unrecognized genius."
I have a thing about cows, and in my opinion cows and mugs are a match made in heaven. Cow-mugs. Lots of them.
(I keep telling people that I'm not eccentric, I wonder why they don't believe me.)
