thegrrrl2002: (Rodney)

There's an audio interview with David Hewlett up at Gateworld, orginally posted back in June. There's a transcript, but I definitely recommend listening to the audio version. He's quite funny, and just as adorable as Rodney is. Imagine that. Sounds like he's having a great time on the show.

A snippet:

When asked about his fellow cast members:

And Joe has this fantastic leading-man look, leading-man looks -- which I don't think is natural. I'm giving him tips on that stuff.

Hee! So cute.

He is really just about as adorable as Rodney, and you know, I would have no clue how to go about it without us earning a reputation as flaky as the Save Daniel Jackson crew, but I wish I knew a way to make sure that TPTB understand that Rodney is Da Man!

God, I'm such a fangirl. ::bangs head on desk in embarrassment::

That is a fabulous point, Zoot. My suggestion is that the letters are respectful and objective (well, as objective as possible), and just say how much we love the character, etc. etc.

Of course, I have no idea how the "Save Daniel Jackson" crew are, or how they began. It's possible this would be a slippery slope, here...

I'm not sure that it's necessarily a slippery slope as long as we don't organize a letter writing campaign for Rodney/Shep Lurve. ::g:: I'm actually thinking we should also show some approval for not turning Teyla into the bimbo love interest. These guys pay more attention to the male demographic usually, but I think they're starting to get the drift that the female demographic is also key. I'm not sure what's happened to Andromeda's ratings, but I'll bet when they bimboized the women and Messiah'd Kevin Sorbo's character, they lost some points because of opinionated bitches like me who totally stopped watching, despite the adorable and hilarious Gordon Woolvett. Who knows.

Heh.

Let's Hear it for the Cuties...

Yeah, I also stopped watching it a year to two ago. Not so much because of the bimbo aspect, but because the whole theme of the program changed. Suddenly the Commonwealth (which always gave me a little frisson of Canuck joy when I heard it), which for at least a season had been the whole reason for being, was suddenly repaired, zappo. So there was basically no real reason for Andromeda to go hurtling around space anymore. And then the fact that there was no crew until they needed extra bodies was just stupid. Even worse was that the plots of the eps just plain stopped making any sense. I kept getting the feeling like they had lost one or two vital pages of script.

But yes, I love Gordon Michael Woolvett. He even of the cute name. Must make an icon...

Still need an icon of Seamus Harper, though... ;->

I liked the comment about walking down the writers' corridor making all the writers stick out tiny heads like prairie dogs. And how after saying that, they'll probably write him going off after a file and never coming back. Hee!

But! I don't love to hate McKay, I just love him. Nope, no hating on this end. Why would he think that? Well, now that he's not calling people dumb blondes.

It amazes me that anyone can say Rainbow Sun's name without pausing and giggling hysterically for a few minutes. Just me? Am I really that shallow compared to the rest of the world? Ok, best not answer that...

Odd that he calls all the males casts members by their real names even when discussing their characters, but was one for one with Tori/Weir and only used Teyla.

Thanks for the link!

Hate McKay? WTF?

Yeah, it made me kind of sad to hear/read that--that Hewlett would think such a wonderful character would only be enjoyed as how much fun it is to hate him. The guy really needs to check out some group lists or message boards, the poor thing. Or live journals...

I adore him. I freely admit it. :-) Though I just shot him in the fic I'm working on. Well, Sheppard shot him. But still.

Oh, and look!

Hey, given that Sheppard shot him once already on the show itself (even if it was just because they were having fun playing with his invulnerability), you're good to go canon-wise. And oh how I wish they'd shown us that conversation on the show...

I don't know why he would think people love to hate McKay. I mean, sure, in the first ep he was in on Stargate, only a few precocious people even liked him (I hated him), but after Redemption he had, er, redeemed himself and was great. Sure, he's not the hero in the traditional sense, and he has a bit of a tendency to freak out and complain - but his neuroses are what make him a great and interesting character!

Then again, I laughed hysterically whenever Q showed up to bug Picard/the Enterprise as well ("Eat any good books lately?" to Worf may be his best line ever). So, in a sense, I enjoyed the Q/Picard snark that happened once or twice a year, but now can enjoy a somewhat similar snark between McKay and Sheppard in every ep. Wahoo!

I totally noticed that too. Very interesting.

I'm assuming it has to do with number of scenes/interactions filmed together at that point. When you think about it, I'm not sure how much McKay and Teyla have really interacted. They're in the same scenes, but rarely have (or had at the point of the interview perhaps) dialogue with each other. Then again, McKay and Weir have had a lot of scenes right from the start, more so than McKay and Ford so...

Right--I think they were only filming the second ep at that point, assuming they filmed in order.

Good point! I agree totally. I get the impression though, that Rainbow would giggle right along with you. He seems so silly and good-natured.

Loved the prairie dog line myself. I'm getting the impression DH is a real hoot to work with.

I agree that DH would be a hoot to work with. And he sounded so very enthusiastic during the interview, the sweetheart. And yet kind of shy, in that he was worried that if he went on a group list or the like people would be saying bad things about him...

If only he knew, eh?

I've been a David Hewlett fan since Traders, and I'm just so tickled to see him getting all this love for SG:A. He totally deserves it.

Thanks for the link!

He is SG:A, if you ask me.

I really enjoyed him in The Cube, although I didn't connect the actor to McKay for a long time. Duh.

Me, either. I feel soooo stooooooooooooooopid.

I loved him in the Cube and thought he rocked.

And I'm totally with thegrrrl, he IS SGA. If not for him, I honestly don't think the show would have gotten its footing as quickly, or gained an audience as quickly.
