Keeping Your Secret Underground Hatches Locked

***

"No really, I think it's this way," John said, pointing in a direction that Daniel was fairly certain was incorrect.

"What?" Rodney frowned. "It is not." Still, he plowed through the tall grass after him.

Daniel followed, sneezing.

"Antihistamines?" Rodney asked, predictably. "Did you take your antihistamines?"

"Yes, Rodney, I did." Daniel dug through his pockets for a tissue.

"When?"

Daniel waved his hand vaguely. "Earlier." At least he was pretty sure he did. Or maybe he just thought about it and didn't. He found a tissue and wiped his nose. "John, are you sure we are heading in the right direction?"

"The village is just up ahead. Trust me." John stopped suddenly, and Rodney nearly walked into him.

"You have no idea which way to go, do you?" Rodney asked.

"I'm just trying to get my bearings."

Rodney turned to Daniel. "Translation: I'm lost." Turning back to John, he added, "The Genii were very clear which route to take, you know."

"I prefer a straight line." John took off again, this time slightly left of where he had been originally heading.

"Oh, right," Daniel said with a snort. "Straight."

John grinned his cockiest grin. "Yeah, well, maybe not so straight."

"Of course, 'cause everything's a shortcut in Sheppard's world," Rodney was saying to the sky. He shook his head.

"That's okay," Daniel told him. "I'm sure Jack is having a wonderful time at the harvest festival." He smiled as he remembered the pained expression as the Genii insisted he and Teyla stay and celebrate with them.

"Jack?" John asked over his shoulder.

"Oh, why yes," Rodney replied. "*Jack*".

"I see. *Jack* as in 'Colonel O'Neill'"?

"I believe that's the one." Rodney shot Daniel a look. "*Jack*. I'm sure *Jack* is enjoying himself immensely. I'm sure *Jack* will pleased as punch to have to come and find us."

Daniel made a face. He did not want to get into it with Rodney here. Neither of them understood Jack the way he did. They simply saw the Colonel, while he saw the man behind the rank, a man with a lot of walls and troubles but who, deep down inside, was a very gentle person. One who would come by his office late at night, poking at his artifacts and flipping though his books while making oh-so-casual, idle conversation. One who asked him for advice about missions, and listened, really listened to him when he gave it. One who gave him the courage to go through the gate again, convincing him he was needed.

And one who was so not, despite Rodney's insistence to contrary, "straighter than a Mobile Tactical High Energy Laser." He couldn't explain how he knew that, because Rodney wouldn't understand. But he could sense it, deep down in his soul, the wanting and needing coming off Jack in waves. The man was burning up inside.

It was just a matter of time.

But Rodney didn't need to know that. Because Rodney would never understand. If it wasn' t in black in white, if it couldn't be described in equations, it didn't exist.

"Maybe we should check in," Rodney suggested pointedly. "I'll bet *Jack* is getting antsy about us being gone so long."

"What, you think he's afraid we're all having a roll in the hay together?" John asked with a smile.

Daniel grinned back at him, brushing his hand along the top of the waist-high grass. "I don't think anyone would see us if we did."

Rodney batted at the large flying insect buzzing past his nose. "Insects. Biting, crawling, buzzing insects. Don't even think it. Fields and sex do not go together."

"That's not what you said that one night, after Sarah's party--"

"Daniel, will you please stop with that story? You made it up. I have no recollection--"

"Out in the field behind the library--"

"He has an exceedingly vivid imagination--"

"Really? In a field?" John eyed Rodney speculatively, then turned to Daniel, brows raised. "Really?"

Daniel nodded. "Really. He was a wild thing. Got a round of applause afterwards, even."

"Right. We're lucky we didn't get our heads bashed in. Not that I remember it, or am in any way acknowledging that it actually happened anywhere except in your own mind."

"Nah. They were all women. They enjoyed the show. And yes, Rodney, it did happen." He nudged John with an elbow. "A couple of shots of tequila and he'll agree to anything."

"Oh," John said, carefully. "Very interesting. I'll keep that in mind."

"He even took a bow. The crowd went wild."

Rodney looked distinctly uncomfortable. "Must you give away all my secrets?"

Daniel chuckled. "As a matter of fact yes, I do, Rodney."

"Say, Rodney," John mused, "You didn't seem to mind me knowing that bit about licking behind your knees." He cocked his head toward Daniel and in a stage whisper added, "You were absolutely right, the noises he made were *incredible*."

"I told you so." Rodney, Daniel noticed with surprise, was blushing. Actually blushing.

With a quick smile Rodney ducked his head. "Yeah, well--why are we discussing me, anyway?" He fumbled with a vest pocket and pulled out a small scanning device. "I'm sure there are far more scintillating topics of discussion--huh. How about that." He stared at the device, pressing a few buttons.

Something in his tone, and John went immediately into alert mode, bringing his gun around. "What is it?"

Daniel's heart beat faster. "Wraith?" Hard to believe, on this serene, pastoral planet, all green grass and blue sky and birds singing. He turned, expecting the monsters to leap out from behind the nearest tree, horrific, life-draining monsters.

"Over there." Rodney turned, stared out past a thicket of trees, then looked back down at the scanner. "Some kind of strange energy reading." he said, with a jerk of his chin toward the thicket.

"Define strange."

"What, you don't know don't what strange means?" Rodney asked, scowling.

"Rodney," Daniel admonished, hand tightening on the grip of his Berretta.

"Strange enough to leave the route back to the village?"

McKay shrugged. "It's a radioactive reading in an Amish world. Your call."

"Huh." John looked thoughtful. "Let's check it out."

"It's not Wraith, is it?" Daniel asked, trailing behind the two men. "Because--maybe we--you know--should check back--" He didn't know where the hell they were. He wanted Jack, because he knew he'd be safe with Jack. It wasn't as if he didn't trust John. John was very capable, and surprisingly smart, but too inexperienced. He wanted Jack because Jack knew what he was doing and Jack was an unstoppable force.

"It's nothing like the readings we get from the Wraith ships, Daniel," Rodney said, his tone suspiciously gentle. "This is something completely different."

"And from what we've learned, when the Wraith are on a planet, they don't hesitate to make their presence known," John added.

Unconvinced, Daniel followed anyway, eyes darting about for any sign of movement. It didn't take long for them to get beyond the trees, and then all there was in front of them was a broken-down, ramshackle barn. Not scary at all.

"Rodney?"

"That's exactly where the readings are coming from."

"Well, let's see what it's all about."

"Shouldn't we check back?" Daniel asked, his voice rising in pitch. "Maybe we should report in to Jack, let him know we found something."

"We will, Daniel," John assured him. "As soon as we figure out what that something is."

Rodney tugged on the wide door, swinging it open. "Come on."

"Since when the hell did you become the great fearless explorer?" Rodney was just as nervous about this kind of unknown as he was, Daniel was sure of that. But Daniel sighed and trotted in after them anyway. It was only an old barn, after all.

Hee! Taking the, uh, indirect path back to the village seems oh-so-appropriate for these guys and their burgeoning romantic entanglements.

Not to mention--man, if John pissed off Cowen, how's he going to deal with Jack, who's got postgraduate degrees in pissing off arrogant foreign leader-types?

But then there's the Daniel factor. He's got a way of smoothing things over, and talking sense to Jack. (When no one else can).

I'd take on more of this ep if only I could find a damn transcript of it. It's the only on missing from all the on-line collections. And the CD Kylie sent me with the avi on it doesn't read in any of our computers. ::sulks::

What I'm doing for Troyswann (who had a problem with a BSG episode) is uploading it directly to her computer... I still have all the Atlantis episodes archived so if you know how to setup an FTP server I could upload it... Or I can set one up for you to download from. Regular Daniel, I don't either. But the way Sal presented this AU Daniel, I was able to buy into it. Especially as something that happened in the past, while they were in grad school or something.

Although I not sure they liked each other a whole lot, either. But the sex was good. *g*

No, they've kind of got that "will never ever be in love" vibe, but they're both smart enough to keep the other from getting piss-bored at stupidity, and they're both high-verbal, and they know each other well enough to not worry about having to play nice. *g* They're comfortable with each other.

Definely a 'not in love' vibe, but there is love and caring there, I think, maybe now that they're older and more mature. (Well, a little more mature). Comfortable. And I think they understand each other, probably a lot better than most of the people around them. Even when they were in college, around smart-scholarly type people.

Of course, when I think of them in college, I'm envisioning Rodney fucking James Spader.

I definitely remember in high school, having a few "friends" among the smart kids where we didn't necessarily really like each other, but we were in all the same classes for years and we developed a kind of detente-rapport. Which in a college environment could totally have led to sex, when you've had 9 hours of sleep in the past 3 days, just turned in 3 problem sets and a lab report, and are running on Mountain Dew, chocolate and sheer cussedness.

Of course, when I think of them in college, I'm envisioning Rodney fucking James Spader.

Damn, I loved this episode, and adding poor Daniel to the mix is wonderful! I've really loved your additions to this new AU. Thank you so much for injecting your usual humour and warmth, and giving us a Daniel who is still--and rightfully--fragile, but not broken. It's definitley obvious that Rodney and Daniel have both found new loves, but the deep fondness that remains between them is lovely. I do think that they like each other a great deal, but that being lovers is more about them trying to find comfort in the security of the past when their present is so voliatile. Eventually they won't need to do that and they'll be able to move on.

Now, if you could just write a fic where Jack stops loathing Rodney quite so much, I'd be over the moon... ::g::

Thank you for these two lovely ficlets,

commenting over here too (read this on peg b first.) because i was re-reading and started giggling insanely at just how frelling destined daniel and jack are.

this daniel is a bit more hesitant because it's all so new to him. but despite that he's still able to snark. and he's still able to peel back jack's layers in about a nano-second. i love how you write rodney here as well....his protective stance speaks volumes about his personality. *g*

john, rodney, and daniel are like the archetypal pack of siblings or friends. one eggs the others on, another pulls them back from the edge...but they are definately in it together. i'm wondering how jack will respond to all three of them about whatever happens next.

really, write more, and soon please. *veg*

She wrote a bit on it, covering the events in the Atlantis series premiere then invited everyone else to join in. There's a community now, [livejournal.com profile] pegasus_b, and folks are writing little snippets and playing off each other's pieces. It's really quite fun.

Very nice snippet. I adore this little bit:

"Jack?" John asked over his shoulder.
