SG1: It's Good to be The King
Awww, that was fun and silly. It was fun seeing Maybourne again, especially as King. It suits him, you know? And yes, I squealed like a little girl when I realized they were going to find the puddlejumper. As for those prophesies, I'm willing to go with Maybourne being able to read ancient, but what I want to know, is why the Time Traveling Ancient decided to write it all up? I can't think of any good reason, aside from 'oh, look at me, I'm a Time Traveling Ancient, aren't I fabulous?". Well, you left your ship behind, maybe you're not so fabulous after all. The other question I have is, if this TTA was around to see all this, where was he/she during the show? Shouldn't they have been around to witness all this? Oh wait, they already witnessed it, because it's already written down.
So where was he/she during the ep?
See, time travel eps make my head hurt. Let me just focus on the pretty instead--and oh, so pretty it was. Why does MS look so damn good in a hooded robe? I mean, breathtakingly good. It must be those eyes. I won't even ask why he and Teal'c hung around to get discovered and beat up. Because that's how happy I was with the pretty. And Jack, yay, Jack is off-world! And he and Daniel get to be cute together. Concentrating. With Carter in the background looking cute and eager. That was all very fun. As was the stand-off with the guns and arrows and crossbows. Yeah, Jack, we miss this, too. And I missed you looking all hot in the sunglasses and oh, look at you getting all excited over the neato keen flying machine. I'll bet he acts just like that when Daniel brings home the new sex toys.
I liked Wayne Brady as Trelak. Sure, he wasn't as menacing as most First Primes, but he also came across as a little smarter than most first primes, too. And you just know he was having a ball. Especially during that very dopey fight scene.
They all had flowers at the end, too. Jack shouldn't look so good carrying a bunch of yellow wildflowers, but he does.
I have to admit, though, the overall feel of this ep was one of 'yay, Rick's on a shoot with us!'. Compared to Atlantis, I'm seeing the actors more than the characters in SG1. Atlantis is more earnest, and is trying harder than SG1 at this point. Which is not necessarily a bad thing, it's just that the vibes from the two shows are very different, at least during the last two episodes. Granted, the last two SG1 eps have been on the lighter side, so maybe that's it.
Hot Zone
I've probably already squealed over this ep when I first saw it, but it's worthy of another round of squealing. DH with the whole dying thing--that man is so fabulous. Saving small children. Zelenka is fabulous in this, too. I love the way he works with Rodney. Plus those cute little distressed!Zelenka moments. ::wibbles:: But I can't believe Sci-fi lost the first three minutes! All that dead air. The cut out the adorable prime/not prime thing. Rodney and Zelenka teasing Ford. Okay, Ford got kind of mean with them, but it was good, geeky fun for a while there.
This was one of those 'everybody does their part' episodes, which I really enjoy. Even though, to me, this was Rodney's show. This is the first time, I think, that we get to see him being in charge and very, very competent. (Mmm. yeah). Aside from the premiere. He's comfortable with that role, especially when he's in his element--the city. And he's just a tad obnoxious, which is why we love him so. And speaking of obnoxious, we get to see a less-than-pretty side of Sheppard, going against Weir's orders like that. I wish Weir had slapped him down harder at the end, because he so deserved it. Sure, he thought he was doing the right thing, but he wasn't in charge. Yay for Teyla, too, telling him off, in her very polite Athosian way. And yay for Teyla, whacking him in the ass. When I saw the spoilers for this ep, I was afraid it was going to be shippy, and I was so relieved that it wasn't. Instead Telya kicks his ass, and then later tells him he was wrong to do what he did. I'm very happy with that.
I was also very happy that Sheppard was the one who figured out that overloading the naquada generator would cause a big enough EMP to take out the nanoviruses. Smart, pretty boy.
The one thing that really, really bugged me about this ep--why would the Ancients (or whoever built the nanoviruses) store them in breakable glass containers? Tell me teflon-lined plastic containers don't exist in their world? All that technology, and they can't come up with shatter-proof storage devices?

Date: 2005-02-05 05:11 pm (UTC)Sheppard really is obnoxious and bratty and, hell-fire, *wrong* in this ep. The consequences of being impetuous and overturning the chain of command haven't really bitten him hard in the ass yet, but I really hope TPTB make that day come.
Almighty Yay, however, for daring to have the lead characters repeatedly show they are less than perfect and often irritating or snotty. And yet, since they still deliver when up against it, we like them and understand why they're liked. It feels much more realistic to me than SG1, overall, where the rule of thumb tends to be that none of the Fab Four can ever really Do Wrong, even for the right reasons (as Shep does). SG1's wrongs frequently turn out to be rights, by happy but deeply improbable chance.
The only nit I had on reflection was, if the nanites don't kill people with the ATA gene, why would they give people with the gene the same hallucinations? What's the benfit of that? Other, of course, than how cool it is to see McKay freaking out and Zelenka spotting him freaking and looking so worried.

That was one of my favorite little unspoken bits in this episode, but yeah, McKay having the hallucinations but not the 'splody brain makes no sense.

Date: 2005-02-05 05:27 pm (UTC)He is, he is. Exceedingly bratty. While I'm sure we're supposed to think he did it to save Weir's and everyone else in the control room's lives, he comes across as a little kid wanting to get his way. And it did kind of bite him in the ass (his entirely theoretical ass, that is) since that guy got into the mess and infected a whole bunch of people. Although none of them died, now that I think about it.
for daring to have the lead characters repeatedly show they are less than perfect and often irritating or snotty.
Yes, yes! I can relate to these people. They're scared, they're snippy, they have moments of glory, then go back to being snarky again. I love that they make mistakes. I love that they are somehow bumbling through and surviving. (Some of them). It makes them very real.
if the nanites don't kill people with the ATA gene, why would they give people with the gene the same hallucinations?
Good question. My guess is, that the gene therapy doesn't quite give you the same level of protein, and therefore protection, that the native gene does. There does seem to some inherent variation on the effectiveness of the gene itself--Jack and Carson seem to have to really work to activate devices, while John just touches things and they go on.
I'm not really sure those two things have anything to do with each other. Anyway, I'm thinking that the folks born with the gene wouldn't have any symptoms, while the gene therapy folks have mild ones.
Yes, I am grasping at straws.

Date: 2005-02-05 05:14 pm (UTC)You did read my rant earlier this week about how SG1 is like the boyfriend who just wants to sit in front of the TV and get takeout EVERY SINGLE NIGHT, right?

Date: 2005-02-05 05:29 pm (UTC)Yup. Definitely a 'you know I'm wonderful, so I don't have to try to impress you anymore' kind of thing.

Date: 2005-02-05 05:18 pm (UTC)Isn't that the Ancients' motivation for most everything? heh. See storing deadly nanoviruses in breakable containers. I don't know. I just don't get the Ancients. I'm narrowly avoiding mentioning a spoiler for next week's SGA, but you know what I'm referring to anyway. *g*
I never disliked Teyla but this was the epiosde that made me go zing. *love!* She kicks ass, she smacks down, she rocks. *g8
I was also very happy that Sheppard was the one who figured out that overloading the naquada generator would cause a big enough EMP to take out the nanoviruses.
What I wonder is just how many naquada generators do they have on hand? Because I fear they're going to be the new infinite supply of shuttlecraft. :-)
no subject
Date: 2005-02-05 05:43 pm (UTC)Seriously, I do wonder about them. This virus thing is kind of creepy. Are we really sure they weren't the ones who designed it? I think there's a whole lot about them that we don't know yet. And it's not going to be good.
Teyla definitely rocks. She rocks even more by the end of the season. *g*
What I wonder is just how many naquada generators do they have on hand?
Yeah, they're down two, right? "Hide and Seek", and now this one. Not to mention how many scientists they are down. Two last week, four this week? That's gotta hurt.
I so love that geeky science almost always saves the day here. Sure, there's heroics involved, but all through the season, it's science and technology to the rescue. I am so filled with the geek love.

Date: 2005-02-05 05:24 pm (UTC)And while I enjoy Daniel, I was painfully aware of some of the faces he was pulling during this ep. Eep, they were scary.
Only thing I can think of re: TTA is he knew he needed something (in the future) from the civilization as it stood...and Harry introducing modern Earth elements (the irrigation, the water wheel design, the medicines, etc) probably played into that. He probably saw and knew he needed both Harry and the civilization to develop the way he spelled it out. And without the records, could he guarantee it?
Overthink it? Why do you say that? ;)
LOVED Wayne Brady. I just love him anyway, and I liked the quiet menace he put into the role. Though he was looking rather...wider...than I recall him being. Smart villians are the scariest, don't you think?
Also loved Hot Zone. Loved McKay. Loved Zelenka. Loved the various smackdowns in the eppie. Much, much love for this ep.
no subject
Date: 2005-02-05 05:54 pm (UTC)That's entirely possible. There could also be some grand scheme that we don't know anything about yet. There was a reason for SG1 to find the jumper, maybe.
Or, they all have God complexes. Worship me! I shall leave you mysterious writings and guide you. And make Harry your king. ::giggles:: I love Harry, too. He grew on me.
LOVED Wayne Brady. I just love him anyway, and I liked the quiet menace he put into the role.
That's it--a quiet menace. He wasn't as over the top as some First Primes have been. I thought he was very effective. And...solid. *g* Like you said, wider than usual. Most be the armor and the robes and stuff.

Date: 2005-02-05 05:42 pm (UTC)I've been trying to figure out what feels so weird about this season of SG1, and I think that nails it. I'm not objecting, because it's still fun to watch, but I'm not really seeing "Daniel talks to Jack about whatever," I'm seeing "Michael is having a good time hanging out with Rick." (Of course, I was on tons of cold medication while I watched it, so I don't totally remember what was going on anyway.)
no subject
Date: 2005-02-05 05:59 pm (UTC)And, like you said, it's very fun to watch. They're as cute as hell. But it takes me out of the moment.

Date: 2005-02-05 07:03 pm (UTC)Based on some spoilers from upcoming eps, I have a feeling it won't be a TTA. It may be a self-fulfilling prophecy thing. They need a time travel device, they now have one. The "prophecies" tell them what they need to know, so perhaps it's one or more of our people doing a bit of time skipping to leave the message, so they'll know about the time travel device, because they're going to need one. And does someone have any Advil now? Time travel gives me a headache.
I have to agree about seeing the actors much more than the characters recently, especially for Rick and Michael. Prometheus Unbound? That was Michael, not Daniel, though most of the ep. I'm curious to see how the "reboot" with new cast and a new direction will affect things.
And speaking of obnoxious, we get to see a less-than-pretty side of Sheppard, going against Weir's orders like that. I wish Weir had slapped him down harder at the end, because he so deserved it. Sure, he thought he was doing the right thing, but he wasn't in charge.
Yeah, he definitely should have gotten a much bigger slap. He was totally in the wrong, even though things turned out OK. The military didn't make up the rules just for grins. But this is a problem I'm having with both shows -- characters screw up big time, and it's either ignored or they get a pat on the head and told it's not their fault. I don't expect them to be perfect, but I expect there to be some sort of repercussions when they screw the pooch.
Oh, and regarding the question of who created the virus brought up in the comments... I'm thinking there's a third party out there, who created and/or controlled the Wraith. I'm thinking Founders and Jem'Hadar from DS9. Keep in mind too that the virus might not be the final product either, the effects we see might not be the ones intended.

Date: 2005-02-05 07:32 pm (UTC)Okay, so that's an interesting thought. And yes, my head hurts even worse now. *g* I suspect it's going to hurt even moreso during "Mobius".
It would have to be someone who understands and can write in Ancient, right?

Well, I think there are more repercussions on SGA. Last week, two scientists died because they screwed up, but then again, it wasn't like someone directly disobeyed an order. In this instance, I definitely agree, Sheppard undermining Weir's authority really should have been taken more seriously.

Date: 2005-02-06 01:17 am (UTC)SGA really does pick up, although next week is a bit of a clunker, except for the sheer glory that is Rodney. And Sheppard is very pretty and cute.
I think my brain might explode from contemplating the rest of SG1's season, though. I've read some spoilers, but not all, and OMG, it's going to be wild. Folks are squealing over "The Reckoning", and I'm so jealous!
And yet I'm not downloading the eps, like I did for Atlantis. I just couldn't wait for more Atlantis.

I had trouble with Wayne Brady as a First Prime. As I mentioned in my write up, I kept expecting him to break character, a la Whose Line, and possibly break into song. *g*
Rodney was great! Loved his dying speech, lol, and then the surprise when he didn't actually die.
Unlike you and everyone who's already commented, I'm in John's corner on whether he should have gone after Peterson before he reached the populated areas of the city. He would have definitely infected others had he not been stopped, and though the attempt ended up failing, I think it was worth the effort. On the issue of disobeying Weir's order, I'm unclear on what makes something 'military'. (eg, if the CDC gets involved, the national guard immediately moves in, right?) Who gets to determine if something is 'military'? (I must admit that I have not seen all of the aired eps, though, so I might not have a complete understanding of what's supposed to be going on in Atlantis re command.)

Date: 2005-02-06 02:52 am (UTC)I saw HZ as the RODNEY show in that everyone deferred to him. Including Beckett. Ya know..the medical doctor! LOL
John wanted out right from the get go .He's all about action .BUT..he stayed put until RODNEY said..someone has to stop Peterson. Weir should never have locked him in. He and Teyla were far away and could have reached the Hazmat suits safely...which they did. THIS is when Weir should have let him go and started NEGOTIATING. At which point Rodney would have just jumped in and said..shut up Lizzie..let him go. Peterson CAN and WILL get to you. Did you NOT hear me say he knows almost as much as ME about ancient Technology.
The other cool factor is BATES. Bates who is head of security, put there by lizzie and who has no problem being vocal and argumentative when he disagrees with Shep. Bates did not even hesitate. He went for that door control. HE agreed with Rodney. GET PETERSON!
Shep and Weir had a pissing contest. I loved it. Loved Shep getting his butt kicked by Teyla and told he is as locked in as Weir. And that's the thing. Both Shep and WEIR were wrong.
And Shep and Rodney then continued working together I loves them so.
And Rodney came up with the basic save and Shep fixed it to make it work and risked his own, not at risk life, to save everyone.
The talk at the end was deserved, but I'm all about the Rodney and Shep saving the day thing. What did Weir contribute? Really? She wanted to wait. Zalenka and Ford would have died. Rodney...The man who was running the show and RIGHT RIGHT RIGHT all along told her...The TIME IS NOW! SO see...Shep knew what he was doing. Whatever Rodney said. LOL
Truthfully...the pissing contest was bad timing. BUT..it had to happen and I love how it happened. Tense situation. People react instinctively. Shep for action. Weir to wait. Both needed to temper it. Both messed up, but Shep fixed his mistakes. Weir just didn't contribute a thing but to be pissed at Shep and pissy at Rodney at one point.
And I like Shep/Weir. Very real. Very cool. And Shep was typical male at the end. It's over. Happy ending .Move on. Squee. And he was really Hot. :D
Rodney's NOT dying. Too funny. And I adore Zalenka.
