Casting has been confirmed for the new regular character, Ronan Dex. He is going to be played by Hawaiian actor Jason Momoa.

As much I as do not see the need for a new character, all I can say is, er, yum. I know nothing of the actor--is anyone out there familiar with his work? Is he more than just a pretty face?

Note: Lots of spoilers in that Gateworld link to the ep "Runner". Just so you know.

He's very purty. This might just end up being the purtiest show ever.

*Nothing* can get in the way of McShep.

Although something that can inspire jealous fits might be fun.

So this guy's like, 6' 4", big macho muscular guy...I'm sure he's going to tower over our not-so-macho cast. Think Sheppard's going to feel inadequate? Did he just catch Rodney staring at this guy's ass? Sheppard has an ass of his own, really he does. It's just that the pants are baggy. Not cut right.

I don't know his work from watching, but I have to admit to cringing a bit that he started as a male model and has since worked in B shows like Baywatch and North Shore, where acting is secondary to the pretty. Then again, the guy on Smallville went directly from male modeling to starring on Smallville, and while he's kind of a not great actor, the pretty made up for it (until the plots got so bad that nothing can make up for a wasted hour). And I liked Rainbow Sun Franks, but his only "acting" was through the Canadian music channel - so that really means I should go in without preconceptions.

Other than being alien, I'm not quite sure how his character (weapons specialist, ground force military type) differs that much from Ford (referring to team dynamic, since obviously being an alien is rather different in an of itself). That seems even more of a slap in poor RFS's face, to not go in another direction if the reason for his dropping to recurring status was explained as the character TPTB had issues with (another way of saying, I don't know what reason TPTB had, haven't heard rumors, know nothing and am just wandering by speculating mightily).

I have to admit when I saw his pics I rolled my eyes a little and prepared for the invasion of the Atlantis pretty boy slash between him and Sheppard, because for some people that's really all it takes. Then again, once more I should just tone down my expectations until the show begins, because who knows he could be as snarky and great as McKay is with Sheppard... (except not, because no one can top DH for sheer bitchy snarkiness).

They took a long time to cast the character, so I'm hoping they were looking for some serious talent along with the good looks. You never know. I do wonder what the rationale is behind the addition. I do like RFS very much, but you're right, he wasn't the strongest talent on the show. Aside from that, though, maybe they wanted another non-earth human on the team? Or maybe they needed another potential male love interest for the female leads, since the original two male leads are so obviously involved with each other. *g*

Or maybe they had planned to make changes to RFS's character all along. The storylines of SGA do seem to be a little better planned than SG1.

I'm more concerned that adding yet another regular cast member will cut down on time spent with people like Zelenka and Bates, both of whom I'd like to still have around.

Since RSF has been dropped to "recurring", I would guess that the status quo is the same. Granted, Carson is now a regular character, too, but he was in almost every episode anyway.

But I agree, I love the characters that are there already, and fail to see how another one is necessary. But then again, I thought "Letters from Pegasus" was going to be a dopey, boring clip show. And that the show itself was going to be a pale imitation of SG1. So, hopefully, I'll be pleasantly surprised by this, too.

I know, I'm trying to have faith. They've certainly earned the benefit of the doubt with S1. I've just had my heart broken so many times by tv shows, I have all these walls I put up to prevent intimacy, etc.

Hell my life needs a fanfic writer to come in and fix all my issues through the love of a good man. ;)

Oh, I know what you mean about heartbreaking. I usually refuse to watch new shows, because everything I like gets cancelled. Like "Firefly". It looked interesting, but I was waiting for a second season before I would dare to watch it.

What troubles me a bit is this He is sharp and witty, with a wry wit and an inclination to be brutally honest with others. - the description of that new character.
To me it sounds a lot like McKay. It also sounds a bit like Sheppard. Sharp, witty, wry wit and brutally honest... Isn't that just another character that brings the snark? So is there now going to be Threesome!Snark between Sheppard/McKay and Dex? Are they breaking up Sheppard and McKay and give both of them scenes with Dex but hardly with each other? It hasn't even started yet and I'm already fearing for McShep. *G* And it's probably just the worst case scenario...but you never know with those PTB.

Actually, considering his background, I would suppose he'd get a lot of scenes with Teyla, since they're from the same galaxy and all. He's supposed to be 'distrustful' of the earth folk. I figure this way, Sheppard and McKay get to spend a lot more naked quality time together. *g*

Jason Momoa?

He did the Hawaii Baywatch and that latest Shannon Doherty thingamabob of the week.

He does not suck. :-p He's got a great voice and a nice presence to him. Always been...comfortable with him on screen. Y'know? He's the kind of actor who you can picture his character just ambling over, sitting down next to you and chatting and flirting and all the fun stuff.

Plus, his smile?

*twirls*

Honestly he was one of the best parts of both shows I've seen him in. Half the reason I kept watching them. He's not oscar worthy but, he's watchable and not wooden in his delivery. With the better material Atlantis may give him...

I think he could do this.

And I can't see him playing a McKay-ish character despite the similiar descriptions. He just doesn't have that kind of delivery. Not that i've seen.

Oh, cool! That's good to know. Glad to hear he's decent, talent-wise. (He's certainly more-than-decent in the looks category, LOL).

If he can be good in those kinds of shows, I'm definitely interested in seeing what he does on Atlantis.

JASON was the only reason I occassionally watched North Shore. He's decent an actor. Totally would NOT be able to pull off anything McShepish. I actually see him being a good thing for McShep.

I think he'll be the Anti ford. Ford was YES SIR man with Shep. Dex will be the opposite. Give great conflict for Shep to deal with, along with Pileggi's character. And I'm betting RODNEY Sides with Shep every time! LOL

How tall are the cast? I know Joe is listed as 6'2" in IMDB. And I've seen him standing next to RDA in pics and he's the same height or a smidge shorter. And I've seen a pic of him next to Chris Judge who's 6'3" and Joe was just a bit shorter. I know Shep is taller than everyone but HALLING and isn't HALLING dude like 6'6" Someone said long ago. I've also seen Joe next to Amanda Tapping in the Gate commercials from when SGA started. She's 5'9" and he was quite a bit taller. Hmmm

Someone posted Carson is 5'10. DH is taller than him .Torri looks just a bit shorter than Carson. Blarg.

I thought Jason was like 6'5"? I think a BIG DUDE is needed. He can carry SHEP off the battle field and over to where Rodney is waiting and um..erm..what was I saying?

Interesting! Good to hear he can act. I'm starting to think he will create an interesting dynamic on the show.

Now, if they could only hurry up and get the damn thing filmed. I don't want to wait until July!

Oh, he's very pretty indeed. But somehow, with all these new characters, I think they need more women. Is that shallow of me? Because I'm all about the hot guys, you know me--bring the hot guys on. But...a few women. Token women. That would be good.

I saw the spoilers and think it sounds much like that one DS9 ep (hunting someone for sport, in DS9's case, a breed of people specifically created for being hunted). But I'm game for anything they throw at me. Anything at all.

I weep, for I'm all caught up, and no new eps for like...forever. Wah!
