Sci-fi Friday thoughts
Mar. 26th, 2005 09:46 amMobius II
This was a very fun ep for me, because I decided not to take it too seriously. Time travel always makes my head hurt when I think too hard about it, because--yo, paradox! So I just turned that part of my brain off and squeed. There was a lot to squee about too, dorky Daniel and Sam were so damn cute together. Very cute. Sam got a great line with the explosives bit, and that made me very happy. Dorky Daniel got to manhandle Jack while in prison, and, of course, that really, really made me happy. I was even happy to see that he couldn't see without his glasses. Thank you! About time someone noticed that. I was only mildly spoiled for the ep, so I had no idea Daniel had gotten goa'ulded--cool! Creepy and sad, but cool. Daniel getting killed doesn't quite have the same impact after the billionth time, so I can safely say 'cool' about it without feeling heartless.
While a lot of the ep was played for laughs, I thought AU Teal'c really had a heartfelt moment there, watching the video of himself. You could see it all in his face, as stoic as he is, that he was seeing himself in a life he never dared dream of. It was a fantastic moment.
Back to earth's past again, and Jack gets a great line with the "B.C.?" bit. That was very cute. Almost as cute as "there's a cloaking device?" exchange between him and Daniel.
Daniel, in robes. Guh.
I thought I'd be more upset by the thought that the original Teal'c, Jack and Sam were killed in the uprising, but for some reason it didn't seem real to me. I felt distanced enough by it, and plus, time travel handwaving--I just felt like it was part of the AU timeline to lose them and I knew everything would be reset by the end, so...no big deal. Which is kind of weird for me. And I'm perfectly willing to accept that the team we see at the is our team, that everything has been reset to before the events in "Mobius I". Even with the fish. Hell, I'm easy.
As for the AU shippy stuff--well, surprisingly enough, I thought it was kind of cute. Maybe because it was AU, maybe it was because for once it wasn't Jack looking vaguely uncomfortable and Sam hemming and hawing. They both were on board with it. And it was AU. *g* And Jack got to make intimations about Daniel's sexuality. ::dies::
I thought the ending to the AU portion was a little sudden--I had been thinking that the rebellion would have to fail in order for the gate to remain on Earth. But I guess just getting the cloak to work was sufficient to change to the timeline back to where it was before. (And you can guess how much I loved Jack pointing out that the jumper goes though the gate, so you can't put the gate in the jumper.)
Anyway, I'm thinking this ep should have been a three-parter.
The Siege II
Damn you, cliffhanger!
A big action ep, and it really worked for me. I just loved the swooping from one part of the city to another. That was new and fun and really gave me the impression that they were spread out over the city. And we get the marines coming in to save the day. Maybe. Cocky Everett didn't annoy me as much as he probably should have. He was pretty over-the-top, sure, but he kind of amused me after a while. I did love the scene in the map room with Sheppard, when he gave Sheppard crap about Sumner. And poor Sheppard, he thinks about it every night? Clearly Rodney has to keep him busier in bed.
Rodney was fabulous telling Everett to shut up. And the scientist bitch session in the beginning was even more fabulous. "They don't need us, until they need us."
Weir got to do something, finally! The whole Genii thing seemed squeezed in there to give Weir something to do. I'm thinking they could have used overloaded naquada generators, as in "Hot Zone", but still, I liked it. Especially since we had a lovely scene with Rodney and Zelenka putting the final touches on the bombs. ::geek love::
I thought Sheppard was remarkably restrained about the space mines. I would have been all "gee, now it would have been nice to hold some of them back now, wouldn't it? But no, SOMEONE insisted we deploy them all...".
Yeah, that's why I'd never make it in the military.
Sheppard was also fun to watch in those early scene with Everett, when he insisted Weir be involved. He can do the "yes, sir" thing and make it sound like an insult, can't he? I loved getting to see that side of him, the 'taking orders not just because you're in charge, but because I agree that it's a good idea' attitude again. We haven't seen that aspect of his personality since "The Rising", and his interactions with Sumner.
Then there was the ending, and the damn "So long, Rodney", which broke my heart the first time I saw it, and every time after. Rodney with his big hurty eyes, yes, let's do a closeup and break my heart again. ::grumbles::
This was awfully rambly, wasn't it? I haven't even mentioned Zelenka yet, standing there in the jumper bay, looking so...vulnerable. So many good bits, such great character moments for an ep filled with battle scenes, and I thought the pacing was really well done.
And then John said "So long, Rodney" and I was sad. ::sniffles::
Post-ep fics, anyone?

Date: 2005-03-26 04:01 pm (UTC)It's a ship; it goes through the gate. I thought it was clever.
He really needs to let John be the one who names things. Hmmm, there needs to be story with AU Rodney meeting an AU John, and then getting his brains fucked out.
Post-ep fics, anyone?
It's your turn for that, sweetie.

I've kinda given up now! wish someone had told me its like near impossible! although I'm still not feeling that is *our* SG1 at the end, but i guess S9 will seal it for me! and I *am* sad/confusd/upset/distraught that *our* SG1 died/abandoned in the past! ::sniffles::
but brightside!! YAY I can use my moebius icons freely now *bg*
and Siege II? i really enjoyed it, it was exciting, loved the 'drama'! and 'action' SG should of had more of that! although that commentary scared me now saying, nothings assured!! O.O

I think Danvers is handling those. *g* But yeah, I love the AU thing with them for some reason.
And I do want to write a post-ep fic, but I'm already working on a fic, and you know how I am, my brain can't handle more than one at a time! But maybe...you know, Rodney is so upset, and John's so scared...and I don't even want to think about it. "Two Weeks" was hard enough.

Date: 2005-03-26 04:33 pm (UTC)1- 2010.
2- SG-1 stuck in Ra's time.
3- Resulting AU with the nerds.
2 & 3 merged to give us
4- Fish in pond!AU.
Then there's the whole PuddleJumper shuffle, in which we have, like, three PJs or something. But it's too early for me to consider that. Makes my head hurt.

Date: 2005-03-26 04:36 pm (UTC)I saw the fish thing as a bit of a tweak to the audience, but not as anything that carried a huge meaning. I couldn't take the ep too seriously, because, well, TimeTravel. It just can't be figured out. *g*

Date: 2005-03-26 04:37 pm (UTC)I hit post comment when I meant to hit quote. Is this week over yet?
I hadn't really thought about how scared John is. I thought a great deal about Rodney and about both of them struggling with the aftermath of the battle, the death and the destruction. But I hadn't thought about how John is feeling in that jumper.
Damn you.
