thegrrrl2002: (oh no)

We went to see Pan's Labyrinth yesterday, and it was a truly amazing movie. I'm still feeling sort of stunned by it. It was hauntingly beautiful and horrible and maybe the best movie I've ever seen. See Rodney's expression in my icon? That's how I walked around for the rest of the day.

Go, see it if it's playing anywhere near you!

ETA: Movie spoilers in the comments, and trust me, you don't want to see them!

I hope it comes closer to me in wider release!
Right now it's about an hour's drive. pbbbt.

Oh, I saw it a few weeks ago now and it was the best film I'd seen for ages. It really stays with you, the images from some of the scenes keep coming back to me now. And it was one of very few films ever to make me cry. It is gorgeous and awful and heart-rendingly sad, and just brilliant.

Isn't it though? I felt so shaken afterwards, it took me a while to recover. And the acting was fantastic. I can't believe the girl who played Ofelia was only 11, she's tremendously talented.

Visually, it's very amazing, too! And kind of gruesome in parts, but only tiny parts, and it was part of what made the story so effective.

I read a review of it that pretty much said what you said, but at much greater length. *g* It does sound very interesting, but oh! if only they would ever, in a blue moon, show something like that here. I may have to wait for the rent.

Oh, it's totally amazing, and I'm sure the reviewers said it much better than me. *g* It's a shame you probably won't get a chance to see it in a theater, though. The visuals are very, very cool!

I can't wait to see this movie even though I'm dreading it too because I can tell it'd going to be one of those movies that will stay on my mind for a long time.

I saw the trailer and it blew me away! I can't wait to see the movie. It's not showing here, but I'm going to a nearby city next weekend, so I'm hoping to catch it then. It sounds like it's amazing!

It was so amazing (and creepy as hell). I even forgot that they'd started with the end and still gasped out loud when she was shot.

I know, I was totally shocked, too. I think I held my breath during the last fifteen minutes of the movie.

still gasped out loud when she was shot.

*meep* Sorry.

In my defence, it's the very first thing you see, so I've spoiled you for the first 10 seconds or so.

I was reading a review that someone wrote of the best movies of the year, "300" was on it because they went to an advanced screening, that was like 4th or 5th, what was number 1--Pan's.

I would like to see it, the director is such a fan of movies, scary-weird movies--I saw an interview with him, I can guess that this is just wonderfully creepy and beautifully shot as well.

It is totally wonderful. I want to see del Toro's other movies now--Hellboy and particuarly "Devil's Backbone", which is also set during the Spanish Civil war.

I have a copy of Devil's Backbone if you are in need. That is also a heart-rending, creepy, wonderful movie, it's a fitting sort of prequel/related movie, as it takes place during the war itself.

Hello, I was browsing my friends of friends list and this post showed up.

I saw this film last Autumm (let's say that for once living in Barcelona paid off in terms of seeing films first) and it took my breath away.

I loved the presence of both worls, and Ivana Baquero and Maribel Verdú (she played Mercedes) were my favourites. Well, and Sergi López, but he was so evil and scary that mentioning him horrifies me.

Did you see it dubbed, or with subtitles?

Date: 2007-01-14 10:08 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile] thegrrrl2002.livejournal.com
With subtitles, thank goodness!

All the actors were amazing--I was astonished to learn Baquero was only 11 at the time of filming, she was so natural on-screen I thought she had to be older. Maribel Verdu made my heart hurt and Sergi Lopez just blew me away, he was horrific, yet I could see the human being inside of the monster.

::wibbles::

So amazing!

I'm glad you got to see it in the original version, it's much better.

The girl was amazing. She made the story feel real.

The fun thing about Sergi López is that he's such a down to earth guy, and he always ends up playing the crazy characters.

I hope this film gets all the praise it deserves. I don't know what they've done in other countries, but I was really mad at the marketing here. They sold it as a "fantasy thing with kid" and I believe it hurt the film. There were children at the movie theatre the day I saw it! Some people also left the room, because I bet that was not what they thought the film was. Me, I was left glued to my chair, and so was my friend.

For us it's the fantasy and the reality, it's part of our conscience and it was very brave of Guillermo to touch a sore subject like the Civil War in that context. It made everything work.

I think it did really well for a very limited release over this past weekend. I hope it gets a wider release soon. It's definitely not being marketed as a kid's movie here, though. Because yeah, it got pretty dark and gruesome at times, definitely not for kids!

I want to hunt down del Toro's "Devil's Backbone" now, since I was really intrigued by the setting of this one.

I saw that on Sunday as well, about halfway through the movie, I leaned over to my best friend and said the movie was depressing the hell out of me. But by the end, the ache had oddly lifted some. I really love del Torro's work, this was just...ouch and amazing and horrible and wonderful.
