I hate to think that readers might feel badly about not commenting. Sometimes people are busy, or just don't know what to say, or just don't feel up to communicating with the world at large and reading a fic should make you feel happy, not guilty. Heck, it makes me happy to write them, and I just want to share the happy.

I just . . . Honestly? Putting the pressure on yourself and your readers by demanding/expecting comments sucks the fun out of fandom, and that's not why I'm here. I'm with you-- if someone comments, I treasure it. If they don't, I don't take offense. Sometimes I'm too tired or caught up in RL or simply don't have anything to say, so I figure other people are that way too. ::shrugs::

Now, that's not to say I don't get a rush when I get a lot of comments, because I do, but I certainly don't expect them.

It's like a potluck-- sometimes you get lucky and someone brings cupcakes, and sometimes you're stuck with a bag of stale potato chips, but the whole point of potluck isn't really the food anyway, it's the community.

Seriously though, I totally agree--it's too much like work when you start putting demands on people. Fandom is an escape for me, and sometimes I just want to read fic and not really interact with people. So I can completely understand when other people feel that way. When it starts being serious business, gah, what's the point?

My fanfic reading tendencies involve opening a bazillion tabs worth of fic and then just going through them and bookmarking the ones I liked. I only comment under particular circumstances: a) if something blew me away or made my day, b) the fic is good but no one or very few people have commented on it, c) if something bugged me so much that I feel compelled to comment, even if it means finding the fic again to do so. Otherwise, I would be leaving so many freaking comments on LJ... I mean, it takes over 20 minutes just to scroll through my folder of SGA fic bookmarks from top to bottom, without opening any subfolders! :O

But regarding the question about the probable origin of this recent commenting concern on LJ, I think we should all give her a break. I am fairly certain she is very young -in her early twenties- and as a person of mature years -nearing 50, OMG- I do understand that sometimes one can react far too emotionally.

The fact that she didn't delete her fic means that no one can complain: we haven't lost anything, so really, let her do whatever she wants...

No, I blame the stupid name of LJ's functionality: by the way, I friended you a long time ago but it was just so I could read your posts more easily. I do not assume this means I am actually a friend of yours! It's just a form of RSS feed that allows me to see your posts on my friends page, nothing else, but naming it 'friending' is inherently misleading and is at the origin of this type of misunderstanding and hurt feelings.

Anyway, thank you for clarifying your position, I feel better and please keep up your happy outlook! We can always do with more relevant proofs of Sheppard's or McKay's dorkiness (or Teyla's. Or Ronon's. Or Zelenka's. Or Keller's. Or Chuck's. Or... Caldwell's. That man is majorly sexy!) No Ellis though, please that man makes me want to puke. The character I mean, the actor himself is fine, actually.

Yeah, 50 is getting close on my horizon too, but still, being only in your 20's is no excuse for that kind of behavior. She was rude to her readers and made them (some of them, at least) feel badly. And I don't care whether she deleted her fic or not, it's not my cup of tea. I just wanted to make it clear that I don't share her attitude toward her readers/flist.

I agree that "friends list" is definitely misleading, especially when LJ is used for fandom purposes. It is more like an RSS feed, isn't it? I put my fic out there for people to read, and it's just a way for them to keep track of the new fics. I'm glad people are enjoying them!

Erm...I have to say I've been a lurker for a while now. In fact, since I decided to start reading fics in English, and you were one of the first I've read!

And if I don't comment a lot, it's because I'm a bit shy, and sometimes I don't know what to say other than "OMG! Squeeee!!" lol
There is also the fact that English isn't my native language, so I'm always terrified I'm going to make a huge mistake and embarrass myself!!
