thegrrrl2002: (bite me says Dean)

Parts of this ep were probably okay, but I've never really gotten over Pamela's completely gratuitous and pointless death, so I am really pissed about Ellen and Jo's. Not broken hearted or sad, just pissed at a show that kills off cool women because the writers are so lame that they can't create drama any other way. Oh, wait, yes they can, when they put some effort into it, but apparently it's just easier to kill off my favorite female characters.

Okay, after thinking really hard, I can come up with some good parts - Crowley was cool, and I like the idea that not all demons are thrilled about Lucifer's rising. Castiel's scenes were wonderful and very effective. As was the town full of reapers. Creepy. I enjoyed Sam confronting Lucifer, and Lucifer being a little more off-kilter than when we've seen him previously. And, of course, another horsemen. Finally.

I am still looking forward to the second half of the season, but...just not really excited about it anymore.

You know, I loved Ellen and Jo, but their deaths (while sad) did not seem worthless to me. It heightened what this war is costing, and it gave us a moment to see real family love again, which I thought was powerful.

And I loved Dean's goodbye to Jo.

Yeah, I'm sorry to see Ellen (especially) go, as she was a big favorite of mine, but I thought the deaths were well done and important.

Dean's goodbye almost saved it for me. And I wish I could see their deaths as important, but instead it took me out of the story completely and I really couldn't appreciate the intent.

THIS. Pamela's death was so damn pointless, and she deserved much better after everything she'd been through.

And now this *shakes head* this is why I took so long to get into this damn show in the first place, because I knew they'd break my heart.

My big problem with it is that it doesn't break my heart, it just annoys me because it's pointless and manipulative. Pamela, now, that broke my heart. ::sniffs::

It really smacked of a group of writers who lost their 'how to write a good woman character' flowchart (and that flowchart still sucked since it probably had a 'sleep with Dean' box) and then were so panicked they decided to kill Ellen and Jo for cheap thrills. The problem is, the 'decent characters who help the Winchesters and are axed for their trouble' thing is just so done, to sacrifice two long-running characters who had built up a following and a good deal of emotional investment on the altar of that cheap gimmick is just too lame. When will Kripke realize that his show's fans are mostly women and start treating their show-avatars better? There's only Anna the angel and Becky the fangirl left now, and I don't like either of those roles. >_<

It really is lame storytelling, isn't it? I find it cheap and manipulative. They can (and have) done better than this. ::grumbles::

I was wondering if we'd seen Anna again (I'm unspoiled for the rest of the season, so if you know please don't tell me!). The character is growing on me, although I still think the actress isn't quite up to the part.

Becky amuses me. *g*She won me over by falling for Chuck last week.

It's true that there aren't many women left but I wasn't as upset about the death of Jo and Ellen as others. Their deaths had meaning and it showed Sam and Dean again the importance of family. I don't think the writers are intentionally killing off the women while leaving the male characters untouched by pointless death; no, I think they're kill-happy in general especially now with the Apocalypse afoot. I'm hoping they find more story to tell then stripping Sam and Dean of the people around them, again and again.

The stuff with Castiel and the knowing smile of Lucifer's give me hope that a meatier story may be coming. I loved the lighting and camera angles in those moments between Castiel and Lucifer and it was cool to see things through Castiel's eyes in the beginning.

That's it exactly. It gets tedious. And completely loses its effectiveness.

I really did enjoy all of Castiel's scenes, though. I hope there's more between him and Lucifer in the future.
