Supernatural 5.19
Apr. 23rd, 2010 07:46 amFirst of all:
GABRIEL!!!!
::cries::
You were funny and adorable even though you killed a lot of people as the Trickster. I'm going to miss you. A lot. I grow weary of the show killing off characters that I like. It's lost its effectiveness and now just annoys me. Find another way to be dramatic, okay?
I'm not sure how I feel about this ep. I enjoyed watching it, and the Gabriel/Lucifer scene at the end was very powerful. The actors rocked it. But the tone of the whole ep seemed off to me, after the events of the previous one. I'm glad to see Dean back in fine form again but it all seemed a little too upbeat, considering the circumstances. They were adorable but the mood was jarring. On the other hand, I loved that the pagan gods had a summit meeting. They were awesome. Especially Kali. And Gabriel hiding in Dean's car will never not be funny. ::sniffles:: Loved all the scenes with Dean and Gabriel, and I loved Dean blustering his way through the talk with the gods. Talk about flying by the seat of his pants. And okay, I loved every scene with Gabriel, because I've developed this sort of thing for RSJ. Yum.
It was funny in an odd way to see Sam and Dean so scared of the gods. They were freaked out by the situation they were in, different from the grim determination we've seen in the previous eps.
Lucifer cold-heartedly killing off the gods was downright chilling.
Also, kudos once again to the set designers. That was one fabulous mid-century hotel. I drooled over the sputnik chandeliers in the meeting room.
Horsemen's rings! I'm glad they ended up meaning something. Keys to Lucifer's cage, although why the horsemen would have them doesn't make a whole lot of sense to me at the moment.
As for the ending, I adore Matt Frewer (he's always be Max Headroom to me) but, eeew, going for the gross-out factor now, are we? I may not be able to watch any of his scenes.
We'd better see Castiel soon. And it had better not be to kill him off, because I will never ever forgive the show if it does that. ::shakes fist::

Date: 2010-04-23 01:14 pm (UTC)Hm, well, as much as it kills me that we don't know where and how he is, that leaves more room for fic.
Nevertheless, man, I need to get my hands on the episode quick ... Woe for not bein able to use Hulu over here!

Date: 2010-04-23 07:15 pm (UTC)You're right about the rather upbeat beginning of the episode. And while yes, I agree that we can't have doom and gloom all the time, it seemed rather bizarre to me that this time it was Sam who wanted to go on and Dean who wanted to take a break. Don't get me wrong, he more than deserves one, but seriously? This is a family matter. Finding Adam and Cas is a family matter (nice, and quite telling by the way, that Cas was named before Adam), and Dean normally drops everything to save family. So, yes, there was a rather weird dissonance to his behaviour. Even if it was good to see him almost rejuvenated.

Was I the only one reminded of SG-1's Summit? I had to laugh.
Lucifer was sufficiently terrifying (just so COLD), especially when he killed Gabriel. I mean, you could tell that he was emotionally affected by it, but idk, knowing that he would.
Pestilence was the grossest thing I've ever seen, oh my gosh. Eurgh.

Date: 2010-04-23 08:17 pm (UTC)At least he went out in a noble way, but hell, I wish he hadn't! Oh, Gabriel, I'm going to miss your smirky grin!
I'm sort of dreading next weeks ep, if Pestilence going to be as gross and as full of snot as he was here. ::cringes::

Date: 2010-04-23 08:49 pm (UTC)I thought it was poorly thought out, in terms of the writing. It was such a great set up (SPN does American Gods), and then a lot of talk followed by meaningless deaths. I mean, I loved the concept of a gods summit, and the inherent colonialism comparison between Christin western religions and non-western religions (capped by Lucifer just taking what he wanted - their lives). But it didn't work because it never really went anywhere, and I was unhappy they went with killing everyone (except Kali) off rather than working to keep non-western religions alive. Plus, the one heroic death is... an angel with brother issues. It just was such a wide open concept with so many possibilities, and instead they naval-gazed their way back to brother killing brother and heaven vs hell.
Matt Frewer is awesome though, and that will be cool. I was laughing at his scene because it was over the top gross.
I know I'm in the minority, but I'm ok with Cas dying if it's for a good cause. I like the actor/character, but not if he's kept on in an inorganic manner. I just don't want him to die meaninglessly, which so many have on this show.

Date: 2010-04-23 10:20 pm (UTC)Watching Matt Frewer's scenes made me wish I wasn't watching in HD. And I hardly ever feel that way about SPN. *g*

Date: 2010-04-23 09:33 pm (UTC)I thought it was forcefully optimistic the way Dean used to be about Sam's chances. I have been rewatching SPN from s1 and am now through s2, and this is exactly how he acted originally when he found out about the demon blood and the YED plans, and so forth.
[eta: he actually asks Sam several times to just take a break from hunting, just relax for a while. since about s2 it's always Dean who wants to take a break, he talks about the Grand Canyon and so forth. It's totally in character for him, imo]
Just watched the scene by the car at the end of s2 when he's killed the YED and has sold his soul, and they have work to do and he grins. It's a very Dean thing to do, once he commits to the course of action that he feels is correct, to just go for it.
I think that part of his low level depression so far this season has been due to being unable to decide on a right course of action and feeling walled in. Now that he's decided that he's not letting Sammy down, he's fully committed. Imho!
And yes, Gabriel. All I know is if God could spontaneously ressurect Cas, he can do it for Gabriel too. There must be fic about this!

Date: 2010-04-23 10:27 pm (UTC)Seems like the story moved so slow earlier in the season and now they're rushing things. Or maybe I just don't want the season to end!

Date: 2010-04-24 06:28 am (UTC)Your brain works lovely ways. I'll cling to this hope now. Because, seriously, Gabriel's death was rather pointless at this point of the story. There would have been other ways to convey the ring message than to kill him.
