No, it's a darned British thing. We have incompetent computer repairmen who will shamelessly lie to your face (well, to your ear, on the phone) and Mounties. The British have to get a license to own a TV or they get in Big Trouble. It used to be instead of a cable bill, but for only four channels. But now they have cable, so I don't know if they still do the license thing. (People?)

It gets even better. We have to have a license to watch TV, which allows you to watch the five terrestrial channels, and any additional cable/satellite channels have to be paid for as well. Then in the last year they've added a digibox that can get certain digital channels for free through the aerial. You have to pay for the digibox although the right to watch those free channels all comes under our license to watch TV.

If you're like me and mainly watch the satellite channels (with rare ventures into the terrestrial channel that shows Law and Order), it can seem a little silly.
