Something I noticed in "Tao of Rodney"

I was looking at my screencaps from "Tao of Rodney" the other day, and saw something I hadn't noticed before:





Curtains? Sparkly sheer floor-to-ceiling curtains?



Yes, curtains. (ignoring the dangerously placed candle for the moment) Sheer curtains with a lacy shiny gold pattern and matching tie-backs. Seriously, they're lovely and add that touch of sparkly magic to an otherwise boring and institutional room. John wanted to dress up the place a little, make it his own, you know? After a hard day out in the field, he wants to be able to come back to someplace special where he can relax and feel pretty.

So, did he and Rodney go shopping together for these during their six week exile back on Earth? (John wanted to fix up his office at SGC?) Or were the curtains dropped off as part of a regular Daedalus supply run? John sorting through the boxes, snatching them up and clutching them to his chest with joy. "Oh, Rodney! Look! These will be perfect!"

Come on, there's a fic in all this somewhere!!

I noticed the curtains when I first watched the episode, and was left wondering why TPTB insist on trying to write John as a Kirkian totally 100% straight guy, because... curtains. Sheer, sparkly curtains. No straight man living on his own would have those curtains.

But yeah, he's just setting the mood with all those candles, showing his love of danger by placing the candles too close to his sparkly curtains.

I found the whole set up funny because TPTB could have made it looked pathetic with John using one sad little candle he stole from someone and his room looking all John-like. Instead, it was so pretty and warm and intimate and we're not supposed to wonder about him making it look that way to help Rodney? Rodney who seems incredibly at ease in this room. Jeez, just let them wear their wedding rings already ;-)

LOL, yes, yes! John ran around gathering up candles from EVERYONE, plus his own stash that he'd been collecting, picking up a few every time they went off-world. And you know, he had asked the other teams to keep an eye out for nice ones too, especially if they smelled pretty.

"I need some curtains, custom made," John said to the retail woman, a small smile on his lips. He glanced at Rodney, but McKay was busy, playing with the shiny new thing he had bought a few minutes ago in the store next to this one.

"Of course, Sir," the retail woman answered Sheppard with a slight glance towards McKay. "For your bedroom?"

"Something like that, yeah," Sheppard answered.

"If I may ask, what colour does the room have?"

"Some kind of blue-greyish thing."

The sales lady nodded. "You could stay with the colour and use a dark blue, black or a red as contrast."

"Black would be nice," Sheppard said, sounding interested.

"If you would follow me?" she asked.

"Sure."

* * *

Five minutes later, Sheppard called over to McKay.

"I need your advice," Sheppard held out two samples. "Black with gold lacy patterns or straight black cotton?"

"What?" McKay looked at Sheppard as if he'd grown a second head. "Why are you asking me this?"

"Because you, McKay, have this odd tendency to hang around my room from time to time, remember?"

"Oh." McKay looked surprised. "The gold thing."

"Thought so," Sheppard turned to the retail lady. "We'll take those."

"Of course, Sirs." Despite her not wanting to, the retail lady couldn't help smiling at the behaviour of her customers as they finalized the purchase.

You know ::whistles:: on the right hand side of the window, beside the candle--I swear whatever that little silver jar thingie is...it looks exactly like this ugly jar of potpourri we used to have.

And I think John's little model plane on the window adds the perfect balance of masculinity. *snerk* ;)

"So you look at your own face while fondling things?" Rodney accentuated the last word in a way he probably thought was suggestive, but was just kind of icky.

"Yes, Rodney, every time I fondle things I look for a mirror in which to admire myself."

No, no, see, you're misinterpreting the poor man's curtains completely. Remember Duet and Katie Brown's oddly fairy-tale like room, with the curtains on the bed?
John went to her after Rodney's failed date, and saw those curtains, got incredibly jealous when Rodney suddenly started mentioning Katie again recently and then, on his last trip to earth, brough curtains as well, so he could go and put them up and then pull Rodney to his quarters and say: "Look, I have better curtains. Now, can we finally forget about Katie and have sex?"
